When a EU bureaucrat talks about something like this, he wants to spend their money on government programs to artificially force it. The average european will have little if any say in funding these programs. If they withhold even a portion of their income tax in protest, ultimately a group of armed thugs will show up and point guns in their face.

The whole thing is colossally retarded because europeans are already more in touch with other cultures, seeing as how they are only a train ride away. I think the real idea here is to start promoting the idea that europe is a whole nation, and thus a national EU government is indispensible.

This is the funniest part. The nations of europe built grand cathedrals and magnificent cities, priceless works of art, and created intricate orchestral masterpieces. I don't know how much more neatly the image of multiculturalism as a voluntary, natural and beloved phenomenon could be destroyed by a proposal for a government program like the one in the article. If people are so inclined to it, we wouldn't need a tax-supported program for it. Imagine the following government programs...

* The Drink Beer Initiative. In order to encourage Europeans' failure to drink beer, the EU has established a program to encourage the benefits of beer, provide free samples and rides home.

* The Vacation Program. Because Europeans overwork, this new program will encourage them to take time off by showing them pictures of vacation spots.

* The Teen Sex Mandate. Getting teens to experiment with sex can be hard, so this new program does that providing teen boys with copies of porn mags.

So, are you seriously saying that the average european is isolated and xenophobic or something? That they don't experience other cultures? I always hear on other boards how europeans think americans should be more like them and visit other countries and experience other cultures (we would, but unfortunately that requires a plane ticket, which is much more expensive than a train ticket).

Mid, if the pockets aren't naturally talking to each other, maybe nature's dictating that. The sociobiological, evolutionary fact is that races don't interact as fungibly as members within races. Why does that concept frighten you?

I want a society in which people are interactive with each other and sympathetic toward each other. Yep, I'm a liberal softie masquerading as a racist. It's because from what I see, human empathy extends only so far. It extends to family, and to race. It does not extend beyond that. A humane world is one in which racial and ethnic groups exist peacefully in their own territories.
