More threatening than the missing explosives?

I have not heard on the news any reports of the 40 cm by 40 cm square holes cut in the fence a long the DMZ on the inner and outer fences seperating the free South Korea from their belligerent northern neighbors.

Seems the North is claiming it was made by a defector, but if they knew that, why would they have let him go?

My concern is that the north may have let some small amounts of enriched uranium out of the country and in to the hands of those who wish to do us the most harm (and only a week before our elections.)

While I may sound paranoid, I am only trying to voice my concerns since we all know that the radical islamic fundamentalists want nothing more than to give birth to the second coming of the Caliphate, through the destruction of anything American or those of our allies.

Be vigilant, people, the election is coming, and I anticipate some action by those who feel obliged to the fatwa issued by ObL.

U.S. media were filled Monday with questions and speculation about the whereabouts of some 350 tons of explosives that went missing in Iraq sometime between January and mid-summer 2003. Late in the day, however, news broke of something much smaller that was missing - a piece of fencing, 40 centimeters by 40 centimeters. This hole, while far from Iraq, has the potential to be of much more significance and immediate importance than explosives last seen 18-20 months ago.

At around 1646 GMT (1:46 a.m. Oct. 26 local time), South Korean soldiers on patrol along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea discovered holes in the double fence along the southern border of the DMZ. The hole in the outer fence measured 40 cm by 40 cm, and a hole in the inner fence measured 40 cm by 30 cm. The cuts were found near the southern town of Cheolwon, near the central portion of the DMZ, Brig. Gen. Hwang Jung Seon, chief operations officer at the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

South Korean defense forces in the area were put on their highest level of alert -- termed Jindokgae Hana -- and were searching for potential North Korean infiltrators. While North and South Korea maintain a somewhat bipolar relationship -- equal parts confrontation and cooperation -- there hasn't been a major infiltration into South Korea since 1996, when a North Korean submarine ran aground and its occupants led South Korean security forces on a hunt for several days before all members were killed, many by each other or their own hands.

there hasn't been a major infiltration into South Korea since 1996

I was in Korea then and also that same year a defecting NK pilot flew his MiG-15 over the DMZ and landed it at Suwon Air Base. Also while I was there, there was an infiltration that occurred involving 2-3 NK operatives. One drowned in the Imjin river and I think the other one or two were caught...not sure. All I know is that I spent that weekend with my M-249 and foxhole watching the fenceline.

I think it was to smuggle out contraband to enemies of the free world....when I feel paranoid, anyway.

I hope it was nothing more than a family who decided it was worth risking their lives to live in freedom.....something we take for granted way to often.

It is amazing how many "training accidents" occur in that area.
I was never really thrilled with flying along the DMZ. If it wasn't the rounds flying towards you (they never really aimed at you, just made sure you saw the tracers) it was the grueling S2 debrief that followed.

Anyone who keeps up with the current news of the day, can see one of the most obvious reasons for the invasion of Iraq.
Unlike most Third World Nation in which, we have no problem with daily human suffering and WMD programs. Iraq has something of unique interest to us.
It does not require allot of insight to see that the worlds oil wells are peaking out. The best time estimate is 2020, the worst 2005.
Most of the big wells were discovered how long ago? If they are half empty now, how long, with the worlds increased demand, will it take for them to run dry?
Oil is something we use allot of, we could not feed the worlds populations without it, and we could not lead the world in good works on a demised economy. http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/energyfacts/sources/non-renewable/oil.html

Since we use allot of it and it is a non-renewable resource on the decline. It is one of the main pillars of our modern economy, it would make sense, to think ahead by secureing reserves for our future use.

Getting back to your point, I’m open minded, what’s Mr. Friedman’s perspective on the current events of the day?

1. Bureau of Mines "enough oil for only 10 more years"
2. Dept of INterior "oil will run out in 13 years."
3. Dept of interior again says "oil will run out in 13 years"

The experts have been predicting we will run out of oil since I was a little kid, and will continue to do so for several hundred more years, even counting the increased demand.....

Here are the answers

There are more people buying in to the notion that oil will run out in another 10 years, now....but by all accounts, there is no documentation to prove it.

I wish you were right.
But the facts say otherwise. Do a search for Hubert’s Bell or peak. It was accurately predicted for the U.S. mainly Texas for the late 70,s. It was in the early 80’s when ‘DO DA‘ days finally ended in Texas. The Saudis biggest wells are pumping more water then oil now. I would say unless we cut back on usage, less then 100 years after we peak. One thing that is certain for the immediate future the price of oil will continue to rise.

I don’t think countries are looking to lay claim to the poles because they need Ice.

I read your article, what does the author think the real reason behind the war is, not the liberal view that the economy was anemic and people were complaining about the inability to find Osama bin Laden. and in the other corner, the neoconservatives in the Cabinet were itching to launch ships and planes to the Mideast and take control of Iraq, the president connected Hussein to Bin Laden, even if the CIA could not?
