Oh boy is this going to cause a ruckus. What about “separation of religion” stuff? We can't have preachers making our laws!

Interestingly, both the first House Speaker (Frederick Muhlenberg of the Anti-Administration Party) and first African-American congressman (Hiram Rhodes Revels, a Republican) were ministers, as well.

I think it is more of a counterpoint to the culture war we have been living through. Inasmuch as Christians are routinely characterized as oppressors and bigots, it is understandable that they would support spokesmen who can dispute this view.
