    1. "White House Video Game Czar. This person, Constance Steinkuehler, says the job represents “an incredible opportunity to make good on the claim that games have real promise.”

    2. ...the left, as represented by this president and his administration, seem to think that anything of value has to come from the government. More than that, it has to come from the White House....These people have no idea what the free market is or how it works.

    3. The only thing she can do is force compliance on someone, probably the video game makers, but, given their history, it’s not beyond the imagination that the do-gooders at the White House would force people to buy educational games.... imagine a government bureaucracy monitoring game play.

    4. What leftists (statists) don’t understand is that, if there is a desire for games that teach, companies will produce those games. Why? Because it will be profitable to do so....They will be better than anything that could be designed by Constance Steinkuehler, or anyone else in government.

    5. If Ms Steinkuehler was a great game designer, she’d be in the private sector designing games and getting rich, not at the White House sucking off of the government teet.

    6. For some reason, the left has no problem compelling people to do what they otherwise would choose to do. The way I like to put it is that they like to dictate to people how they should live (what products they should buy, what they should learn, and what they should produce).

    7. You can bet that what they’d like to do is create something like a license to produce video games which requires the producer of the game to insert “positive learning” (the message of which will be totally up to the government)...

    8. It will impose an enormous and unnecessary cost on the video game makers, doubtlessly costing jobs. Yet Obama will somehow claim he’s created jobs.

    9. That is the statist game: dictate what people can do, and force compliance. I’d much rather play a game called “Free Market Capitalism” where people serve their fellow man by providing goods and services people want and need at prices people are willing to pay in a voluntary transaction. Do you think the White House Video Game Czar would create that game? The leftists in the White House don’t even understand how to play it."

Presently, the industry is at around $22 billion for 2008 (conservative estimate) in the US and $30 to $40 billion globally. Here is how it compares with other entertainment industries.
    Music industry - $10.4 billion (US 2008)[25] and $30 to $40 billion globally [26][27]
    Movie industry - $9.5 billion (US)[28] and $27 billion globally.[29]
Book industry - $35.69 billion (US 2007) [30] and roughly $63 billion globally (2002) (Euromonitor Intl)
    DVD industry - $23 billion (US)[31] (buying $16B, renting $7B)

Video game industry - Video Game Sales Wiki - Video Game Sales, Charts, NPD, Graphs, Video Game Figures, and more!

Yeah, having someone watch over an industry that makes more than the movie and book industry COMBINED is just stoopit!

And before you cast any more stones, you MIGHT want to look up how the Bush family manipulated legislation and strong armed people to push their crappy educational software on millions of kids through the schools.

Here we go...make it a Bush thing.

it is stupid. What is the white house going to do? Provide a new comittee to tell game developers how they must make products to sell that fit their perceived ideas for "education"?. You do realize that if they encroach in this indusrty they will destroy it just like they destroy every other industry they try to manipulate.

Some people just have no concept of public vs. private enterprise. There is no authority for this on the federal level. Like most power/industry usurps.

Not so much a Bush thing as a "not exclusively Obama thing"

Having a say in the industry is better than not having a say in it, huh?

What you CONZ seem to fail to understand is that when government gets involved regulating an industry, it's for the PUBLIC GOOD, as the PUBLIC GOOD is NOT in the charter of private business. MAKING MONEY is.

You DO know there's a MARKET for child porn, right?
Are you for the free market when it comes to child porn too? Or would you like government regulation and enforcement?

    There's a happy medium.
IGNORING an industry isn't an answer.
Besides, who will be the first and loudest to scream if someone in the middle east comes out with a "fly the planes into the WTC game" huh?

This is what I thought too and was a bit flabbergasted. It is a bit hyperbolic, but close on the money. Constance Steinkuehler hold a Senior Policy Analyst at the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President.

According to Wiki, The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is an office in the Executive Office of the President (EOP), established by Congress on May 11, 1976, with a broad mandate to advise the President on the effects of science and technology on domestic and international affairs.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_of_Science_and_Technology_Policy

In addition, Constance recently received a private $350,000 grant from the MacArthur Foundation to Review and Research on Games and Learning. Financial support for research to examine learning associated with videogame play across multiple domains, and the development of reports and convenings to share the findings of research on games. The purpose of the project is to support research and reports that advance understanding among policymakers, practitioners and civic leaders of the role of games in learning.
