Forbrig, of the German Marshall Fund of the U.S., said the two leaders' long-distance relationship hasn't been easy. They have had a tense history and clashed publicly. Trump for instance has criticized Merkel for her handling of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Forbrig said some of the differences between Merkel and Trump will need to be smoothed over as the chancellor heads into a re-election campaign.

"President Trump is probably the least popular U.S. president in a very long time. If this meeting somehow doesn't succeed ... this would certainly be a liability politically for Angela Merkel here in Germany."

"I think she will have to get along with him," he said. "There's a whole set of issues of cooperation and a normal working relationship across the Atlantic. It is simply indispensable."

Let's be clear, Trump doesn't give a damn about Merkel or her leadership. He showed this in his body language in the White House post meeting photo op. They are on polar opposites on many issues, and Trump is concerned about America First, as any president should be. Western values and liberty are at risk, while so many global leaders have worked hard to undermine American leadership and drain them of their influence.

She might be on the hotseat back home, but America doesn't have alot of time for weak leaders, some who have spoken out against Trump when they should have remained quiet.

In regards to her statement, she means to say "he isn't popular with Snowflakes, communists, globalists, my circle of entitled world leaders who wish to harm America and American values. With everyone else, he's doing what is right for America".
