I always remember my Uncle, who gave all, in Okinawa. I never had the honor of knowing him.

Thank You Uncle Marshall!

that was the last land battle of the war. it was only about 400 mi from the empire. it was going to be the staging area for the invasion. which was pre empted by the Abombs.

it was also the scene of the biggest Kamikaze attack of the war.

I will visit my Dad's grave. I do this several times a year to make sure the headstone and surrounding area are well kept but I spend a little more time on Memorial Day to plant some annuals and leave a flag. I then take the flag that draped my Dad's casket and proudly fly it from the flagpole in my yard (weather permitting).

I'm not much of a person for crowds so I don't go to parades or big parties. My wife and I will probably take the dogs for a nice long walk in the state forest and then maybe get out in the kayaks for an afternoon picnic near the water. I'll probably grill up something in the evening and drink a toast to my dad; my hero.

I am also going to raise a new US Flag on my flagpole that morning. I am iching to do it now, but I will wait for that special day

I agree with you. With two of his (Biden's) kids serving over in the Middle East, I imagine he has much MUCH more respect for our military, than the liberal progressive military hater who currently occupies our highest office.

Masquarade, I doubt Obama hates our active servicemen and women or the families of deceased ones. You have to have once loved to hate. I think he's indifferent to anyone and anything that does not seem to him to serve his immediate political interests.

This callous disregard and disrespect for the families of fallen soldiers and sailors is just a peek behind the curtain. Obama is a sociopath, IMO.

namvet, I wonder if our Daddies knew each other. I just want to thank your family again for all their sacrifices.

I have no clue what I'm doing this weekend. It's only Tuesday. I'm thinking of helping some little kidlets with a gardening project, but I'm fighting a cold and might have to skip it. I can tell you ONE thing I'll be doing Memorial Day....remembering my Daddy, and all the other men in my family who have served and have now passed on.

But that I kinda sorta do that every day. I was 100% a Daddy's girl, and still am.

and I thank yours. my dad served on a heavy cruiser WW2. the USS Philadelphia CL-41. his squadron covered the landings in N Africa in Nov 42. also Pattons drive across N Sicily. provided escort duty for FDR's trip to Yalta.

I don't know much at all about what Daddy did. He was Army and he served in the Pacific Theater.

Is it still possible to find out? I'd love to know.

yes. go back to the VA. give them as much info as possible. they have the archive records. I would try that first. did he survive the war??? tell em that to.

How will you be remembering those who have died in our nations service?

Visiting the grave of a loved one?
Attending or participating in a Memorial Day parade?
BBQ with family and friends?
Working?

Looks like our President will be vacationing in Chicago.

Obama will use Memorial weekend for a trip home to Chicago

Vice President Biden and his wife will appear in Obama's place at Arlington National Cemetary.

I will be handing out lunches to the homeless, like I do every Monday. I may decide to visit my fathers and mothers grave but IMO, they aren't there anyway. They're in my heart, where they belong.

Note to self: buy a new bracket for your flagpole today!!!

I was just saying to my girlfriend next door, that I think I'll get out all my July 4 decorations ( mostly flag stuff ) this weekend in honor of Memorial Day and in prep for my favorite holiday!

I always spend memorial day thinking about this guy. The last time I saw him he came by to see me and show me how handsome he was in his uniform. He came home in a body bag. All these years and I still remember him.
