Ted Cruz famously opened his remarks at the CNN event with the concept, "Radical Islam," possibly to offend allies such as the Saudi Royal Family, and that icon level, of U.S. Moslem allies going back decades. In common with ISIS/ISIL, at the turn of the last century, Prince Saud was notably killing off less Conservative moslem tribes. That really has nothing to do with how Moslems view the "People of the Book," the Jews and Christians of Western Civilization. ISIS/ISIL more or less kills off any opposition Moslems, itself.

The DNC generally, the candidates severally, have been urging calm in the Republican Campaign--clearly to stave off recruiting and further attacks. Similar to oil prices taking down the stock market, the increase of rhetoric possibly ramped up the attack in San Bernardino. The President had to go on national TV to point out that ISIS/ISIL has lost 40% of their ground gains, and lots of their leadership and logistics capability: Over the last 14 months.
Calling ISIS/ISIL "Moslem" is easily compared to calling the KKK a Christian sect. Jewish easily does not apply. Somehow that gets lost on anyone, affiliated at all with RNC.
People do tend to all be the same: And on the stage at an RNC event.
