Massachusetts Man Says He Was Fired for Telling Colleague Her Gay Marriage Is Wrong

when you tell someone who is gay that they are not the norm in the workplace and put down their lifestyle it is.

I am wondering--was he fired for "stating an opinion" or "pushing his belief on someone else"?

I can understand why the owner fired him--bad publicity!! How is the company to survive if it chases away customers? OH crap--by letting Fox get ahold of the story, they just garnered BAD PUBLICITY!!

Just Great! A company can't make an honest buck in this country anymore!!:doubt:

it doesn't matter if one doesn't agree with it or what one would have done if it were the other way around, I THINK he broke workplace harrassment laws. If he did of course he should have been fired.

The first place to look for an answer, of course, is the definition of harassment. Speech can be punished as workplace harassment if it's

based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or, in some jurisdictions, sexual orientation, political affiliation, citizenship status, marital status, or personal appearance

What Speech Does "Hostile Work Environment" Harassment Law Restrict?

Wow. It is now harassment to express that gay marriage is against the norm.

When done in the workplace to a married homosexual, yes.

Outside of the workplace he can express his views all the live long day.

I just finish reading the story--turns out that Vidalia should be fired for harrassing this man with her personal life

Look like Brookstone will have 2 openings soon!! If you don't have a job, thank the gay marriage for providing you one!!!

Well, that would be a whole different kind of "stimulus package".

I have to doubt this person would have been fired if he were discussing opposition to traditional marriage........

I do too but then again can you cite anything to back that up? How many people are walking around talking about the "deviance" of traditional marriage these days?

Nah, just my opinion. If Mass. is an at will state it doesn't really matter anyway.....

and he should have been fired, you are not suppose to discuss those things in the work place.

Why not????

Are there specific instructions as to what you can and can't discuss in the workplace? I can understand that you shouldn't be allowed to harangue someone in the workplace, but you should have every right to voice your opinion. Next you'll be saying that atheists can't tell religious people that there is no God in the workplace. Or religious people can't tell atheists there is one.

That will be harder to prove when you consider that she had just gotten married that weekend but I can see your point. She could very well have been baiting him. The guy had only worked there "weeks" according to the story ... wouldn't they have to prove that she was aware of his beliefs beforehand to prove he was baited?

Welcome to the new Socialist Nightmare. People really need to stop confusing Liberalism and Socialism. Liberalism and Socialism really are two different things. Real Liberals believe in Free Speech but Socialists do not. The Democratic Party is no longer the party of Liberals it has instead become the party of Socialists. What kind of real Liberal would bow to lick a National Socialist's boots like they do with Hugo Chavez? The answer is that those people are not Liberals but rather Socialists. No real Liberal i know would ever support the kind of brutal suppression of Free Speech Chavez has brought to Venezuela. I think more & more people are finally beginning to understand this though. Lets hope it's not too late.
it is called harrassment in the workplace idiot and no one should have to put up with that.

Since when is expressing an opinion, harassment? So, if I say "I don't agree with you because (insert reason here)" it's harassment?

actually there is!

"severe or pervasive" enough to

create a "hostile or abusive work environment"

based on race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or, in some jurisdictions, sexual orientation, political affiliation, citizenship status, marital status, or personal appearance,

for the plaintiff and for a reasonable person. 4

Pretty much think telling someone they don't agree with their marriage creates a hostile work envirment based on sexual orientation.

Vidala claims the woman, whom he declined to identify, mentioned four times that she had married her partner. He said he then left the store briefly to visit the airport's chapel before returning.

"I found it offensive that she repeatedly brought it up," Vidala said. "By the fourth time she mentioned it, I felt God wanted me to express how I felt about the matter, so I did. But my tone was downright apologetic. I said, 'Regarding your homosexuality, I think that's bad stuff.'"

Yep fire the one that's harassed instead of the one doing the harassing, that's America for you today.

he told the women she was not the norm and that gay marriage is a sin, that is harassment in the workplace and one should not have to deal with that while at work. You are there to work not tell people who wrong their lifestyle is.
Also I didn't make the law.

Right, she can tell the guy FOUR times she's married to another girl, but if he tells her ONCE, it's wrong, HE'S FIRED for harassment, yeah, that makes sense <NOT>

I wonder if he would have reacted the same way if she had married a man? I doubt it!
You have a right to talk about getting married at work, you don't have the right to put down someones lifestyle.
