Mark Steyn Rips Into Obama For Wanting To Silence Free Speech About The Prophet Muhammad

"The future does not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam". - Barack Obama

And now that statement in context:

It is time to leave the call of violence and the politics of division behind. On so many issues, we face a choice between the promise of the future, or the prisons of the past. And we cannot afford to get it wrong. We must seize this moment. And America stands ready to work with all who are willing to embrace a better future.

The future must not belong to those who target Coptic Christians in Egypt — it must be claimed by those in Tahrir Square who chanted, "Muslims, Christians, we are one." The future must not belong to those who bully women — it must be shaped by girls who go to school, and those who stand for a world where our daughters can live their dreams just like our sons.

The future must not belong to those corrupt few who steal a country's resources — it must be won by the students and entrepreneurs, the workers and business owners who seek a broader prosperity for all people. Those are the women and men that America stands with; theirs is the vision we will support.

The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied.

Let us condemn incitement against Sufi Muslims and Shiite pilgrims. It's time to heed the words of Gandhi: "Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit." Together, we must work towards a world where we are strengthened by our differences, and not defined by them. That is what America embodies, that's the vision we will support.

And this is the source of the panty shitting hysterics of this thread? Really?

If so, you're a hopelessly delicate flower of a bunch, aren't you?

Hey, man. You can't just go and take an out of context sentence upon which was built a mountain of manufactured bullshit and show it in context and ruin the whole thing. That's not fair.

The hack partisan media shithead went to a lot of trouble to mislead the rubes. Don't be harshing their buzz.

Yeah, that is some low hanging fruit, isn't it?

Only a muslim would make that statement. You can't slander somebody from the 7th century.

Only a Muslim would say 'those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the image of Jesus Christ desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied'?

Um, why?
No, idiot. Only a muslim would say "The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam." The clue there was "7th century". You can't possibly be that stupid, uh, never mind, of course you can, you're a liberal.

So a Muslim wouldn't have said 'those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the image of Jesus Christ desecrated, or churches that are destroyed, or the Holocaust that is denied'?'?

Because Obama said both.
Then why didn't he just say "The future does not belong to those who slander other religions"?

Because he was talking to the UN. With folks that feel strongly about particular religions. Not merely 'other religions'. So he cited various specific examples and figures from around the world.

Taking his audience into account is an effective and intelligent rhetorical tool used since before Lincoln.

His initial statement was a veiled threat.

That wasn't his 'initial statement'. That was one statement in a speech, packed somewhere in the middle. And there's no threat, implied or otherwise. Again, look at speech:

He's explicitly calling for an abandonment of the call of violence. The exact opposite of a threat.

I fully recognize that you're going to ignore all of the speech save that one sentence. But a rational person wouldn't. And their my audience.

Only a muslim would make that statement. You can't slander somebody from the 7th century.

And the answer is enshrined in our laws: Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech.

Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. As President of our country and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day -- (laughter) -- and I will always defend their right to do so. (Applause.)

Americans have fought and died around the globe to protect the right of all people to express their views, even views that we profoundly disagree with. We do not do so because we support hateful speech, but because our founders understood that without such protections, the capacity of each individual to express their own views and practice their own faith may be threatened. We do so because in a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can quickly become a tool to silence critics and oppress minorities.

We do so because given the power of faith in our lives, and the passion that religious differences can inflame, the strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression; it is more speech -

Pretty ironic for a president who sent out a "truth squad" during his campaign to threaten people with prosecution if they said anything that wasn't "true" about him.

The left will keep preaching about the poor judgment of those who give an honest opinion about Islam. They find insults to every other religion good judgment, apparently, because they have never said that people shouldn't bash Christians or Jews.
If you say Muhammad was evil because he married and had sex with innocent young girls, then Obama would call that slander. It's actually the truth, but the intolerant Muslims will go after all infidels who speak against them.
Obama has expressed far more outrage at offensive jokes than he has about actual murders committed by Muslims. That tells me that offending Muslims is a greater crime than the murder of infidels in his eyes. Yea, I can't imagine anyone but a Muslim seeing things that way.

I don't think he's a Muslim, but many here express his same views on the subject and they're not Muslims, either.

Wow, talk about a weak response. No substance, no rebuttal, no point. You get an F.

First you say Obama is a Communist then you tag him as a Muslim. Muslims aren't Communists dude...they are, in fact, ultra conservative. If Obama is a Muslim that would make him a conservative and you would be a glib LIB! Dummy!
I'm not impressed with your amateurish double talk. Try again, sycophant.

Why would I want to impress you? You're just another nose picking, booger swallowing galoot. I'm just stating facts that are well known among the erudite people who actually know how to apply the word sycophant correctly in a sentence.
