The issue is the mother's lunch met the guidelines and frankly was more nutritious than freaking deep fried chicken nuggets. Yet the inspector told the child her lunch from mom was no good, and gave her a school lunch.

Nothing in the law allows "inspectors" to inspect lunches that children have been given by their parents, ruling them worthy or unworthy and preventing children from eating them. The inspectors are inspecting the school lunches provided by the school, so that they meet those standards.

It has always been that schools have been instructed to be unable to dictate what the children eat... and the parents have the final say in what the children eat if those said parents provide a lunch for that child to eat. If it's junk food, the kids are allowed to eat that junk food.

However, all nutrition being provided by the school is inspected and monitored to be sure it meets the guidelines of the program. In some cases in the past, that has been bad because they've still been providing shitty foods to our children(chicken nuggets, etc).

But THAT is the only thing the inspectors are inspecting.

When Zambrano picked Jazlyn up from school late last month, she was told by Jazlyn’s teacher that the lunch she had packed that day did not meet the necessary guidelines and that Jazlyn had been sent to the cafeteria.

The lunch Zambrano packed for her daughter? A cheese and salami sandwich on a wheat bun with apple juice. The lunch she got in the cafeteria? Chicken nuggets, a sweet potato, bread and milk.
