Looks like lunchbox nazi inspectors are mandated by the Feds

Amazing. Only rabid right wingers could object to feeding children decent food at ONE meal a day. There is nothing stopping you rw's from giving your kids donuts or pop tarts for breakfast and you can always stop at McD's on the way home. And, you have all weekend to park them in front of the boob tube with cheetos and pepsi. Quit worrying that your kids won't be fat and diabetic. I'm certain that you can more than make up for these 5 meals every week.

Funny that when Arnold Schwarzenegger was pushing good food and exercise, the rw's were humping his leg. BUT, let it come from our First Lady and the rw's go all apoplectic on us.

Nothing wrong with pushing good food and exercise, the objection comes in when the fed legislates it. That you fail to understand this does not surprise me.

I remember the food pyramid hanging in the school cafeteria back in the 70's.... but nobody was confiscating your lunch and and throwing chicken nuggets at you. If that had happened, my parents would have been up somebody's ass BIG TIME.

This really blows me away that the USDA has this much power. I am really uncomfortable with this "one size fits all children nutritional guidelines".

Schools also will be required to set certain calorie amounts for various grade levels. Under the new standards, lunches for students in kindergarteners-through-fifth grade have 550 and 650 calories; lunches for grades six-through-eight have between 600 and 700 calories; and lunches for students in grades nine-through-12 have 750 and 850 calories.

Requirements also have been established for breakfast, but those requirements don’t begin until the 2013-14 school year.

Gordon said the calories aren’t set per item, but are taken as an average of a week’s meals.

“The calories really aren’t by day,” she said. “The government evaluates them by a week’s time, an average.”

The government evaluates.....

wow just wow.
Would you be more comfortable if the lobbyists for food processors wrote the regulations defining a healthy lunch for children? Would that be better policy all around? I'm not really convinced that those lobbyists have the nutrition of school children as a prime priority. Maybe those lobbyists would serve their clients better by advocating pizza as vegetables and high fructose corn syrup as a healthy ingredient for school aged children.

Basing caloric needs of children based on grade level is voodoo science.

Plain and simple. I'm not against giving children more healthy choices in the school cafeterias (I remember french fries and gravy).

But this is just nuts. Every child is different and now to have a government mandated across the board calorie ceiling is well insane and authoritarian.
Voodoo science, like patriotism, is the last refuge of a scoundrels and idiots. The right wing has been dismissing science for so long because science tells them precisely how wrong their policies are.

The environment, automobile crash test standards, the nature of mankind and his evolution as a species and now school nutrition are in the cross hairs of this tired old ignorance based phrase~ voodoo science.

Your parents' possible issues with impulse control isn't the issue. People act like this is something new with the Obama administration. Its not.

What is served in our schools isn't fit for our dogs. I know because I've seen how much of it gets thrown away. Kids actually like good quality food but more to the point, they deserve it.

BTW, this does not really address the quality of food in our schools. Chicken nuggets? IMO, that's not food.

Let's hope this is a step in the right direction. And, rw's need to calm down. If they want to, they can force feed pure lard to them to make up for any fresh fruit their kids might get at school.

Nice :clap2:. Don't expect it to change the minds of those convinced that this is a nefarious federal plot to usher in the new age of Socialism in America however..........

You haven't gone to any of the links I provided which are non partisan in this thread have you?

Just rehashing yesterday's talking points to try to get out in front of this story and try to make it a "non story" by saying it's a "non story" over and over again.

My links go directly to the White House, the USDA and schools.

I'm guessing the article didn't change your mind?

I did click on your links to see if the had the applicable section of the Bill. Didn't find any.

Ain't it the truth. The more I read about what rw's want and believe, the more I KNOW how badly our education system has failed.

The cafeteria details are true, but rather than an example of government “lunch bag police” overruling a family, it’s an embarrassing lapse by a teacher, Hoke County Schools Assistant Superintendent Bob Barnes said Thursday.
The girl’s teacher should have handed the child a carton of milk to round out the turkey-and-cheese sandwich and banana she brought from home. Instead, the teacher erred by telling the tyke to get a cafeteria lunch, Barnes said.
“We do not go over and stare down every child’s lunch,” Barnes said. “If you looked at the lunch the child had, I’d love to have that lunch today. However, there are occasions that kids bring lunches that aren’t that complete, and that’s why we try to supplement them with the things that they need to make it a complete lunch.”
The North Carolina Pre-Kindergarten is a state-run enrichment program to help 4-year-olds at risk of starting school lagging behind their peers. Ninety percent of the children qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The program has 1,100 sites serving 25,000 children and is required to supply a healthful lunch. The U.S. Agriculture Department defines that as a serving of milk, two servings of fruits or vegetables, one serving of grain, and one serving of meat or protein.
The federal agency had no involvement in the case involving a local school district and state supervision of nutrition policies, USDA spokeswoman Courtney Rowe said.

Once again we see the conservatives on this board saying stuff they don't know to be true or not. WHY would ANYONE listen to people WHO CONSTANTLY LIE about things.
Don't let a well written article that talks to the principals in this matter get in the way of your perfectly stupid rant CONZ! It'll only make you look for disconnected from reality and things that REALLY matter.

THIS is the sort of stuff that you will look back on and realized that it caused you to lose.

What's in chicken nuggets? And don't tell me that a school cafeteria is making them the way Graham Kerr or Jamie Oliver would.

Can the school guarantee that the chicken nuggets were made in a "peanut free" factory?

by Mike Adams, NaturalNews.Com

Ever wonder what's really found in Chicken McNuggets? Some of the ingredients, it turns out, seem to belong more to an industrial factory of some kind, not a food retailer. According to the McDonald's Corporation, its famous Chicken McNuggets are made with ingredients including:

Autolyzed yeast extract (which contain free glutamate, similar to MSG),
Sodium phosphates and
Sodium aluminum phosphate.

But that's not the freaky part. According to McDonald's own website, Chicken McNuggets are also made with:

"hydrogenated soybean oil with TBHQ and
citric acid added to preserve freshness" and
"Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent."

At least two of these ingredients are artificially synthesized industrial chemicals. TBHQ, a petroleum derivative, is used as a stabilizer in perfumes, resins, varnishes and oil field chemicals. Laboratory studies have linked it to stomach tumors. "At higher doses, it has negative health effects on lab animals, such as producing precursors to stomach tumors and damage to DNA. A number of studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high doses of TBHQ may be carcinogenic, especially for stomach tumors." (tert-Butylhydroquinone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Dimethylpolysiloxane, a type of silicone, is used in caulks and sealants, as a filler for breast implants, and as key ingredient in Silly Putty. Says Wikipedia:

"PDMS is also used as a component in silicone grease and other silicone based lubricants, as well as in defoaming agents, mold release agents, damping fluids, heat transfer fluids, polishes, cosmetics, hair conditioners and other applications. PDMS has also been used as a filler fluid in breast implants, although this practice has decreased somewhat, due to safety concerns. PDMS is used variously in the cosmetic and consumer product industry as well. For example, PDMS can be used in the treatment of head lice..."

Not that the other ingredients are any better. Because cotton is not regulated as a food crop, cottonseed oil may contain chemical pesticides that are banned in food production. It is also almost always genetically modified. Hydrogenated oils, of course, typically contain trans fats, the artificially produced fats that are unusable by the body and that studies have linked to a number of detrimental health problems. And autolyzed yeast extract is a chemical taste-enhancing ingredient containing free glutamate that manufacturers use as a friendlier-looking replacement for MSG.

And what about the chicken in Chicken McNuggets? It's factory-farmed chicken, not free-range chicken. So it's the kind of chicken that's typically treated with vaccines and hormones while being fed conventional feed products that are medicated with pharmaceuticals and grown with pesticides.

Yum!! Don't forget to ask for extra dipping sauce. We haven't even talked about what you'll find in there...

The teacher in NO WAY should but in to the meal/drink the family provided... they can grab that carton of milk and shove it up their own ass.... if I give my kid a juice box or a fucking Joly cola, it is of NO CONCERN to the goddamn teachers, administrators, lunch ladies, principal, or whomever...

Why is the federal government involved in the least bit?.......:eusa_whistle:

It the National School Lunch Program.

The legislation came in response to claims that many American men had been rejected for World War II military service because of diet-related health problems. The federally assisted meal program was established as “a measure of national security, to safeguard the health and well-being of the Nation’s children and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural commodities.”

This legislation by the President the First Lady and the USDA ups the ante big time. And we're not just talking $$$$$.

This is not what it started out to be. I know, it's one of the talking points.

I wondered why it took so long for some one to try this shit.

Bush signed a nutrition act too. Boooooooooooooooooooooooosh.

Seriously? Was it the First Lady who sign the bill?

Just so every one is aware, here are the "new provisions"

Provisions

In addition to funding standard child nutrition and school lunch programs, there are several new nutritional standards in the bill. The main aspects are listed below.

New nutrition standards

Gives USDA the authority to set new standards for food sold in lunches during the regular day, including vending machines.

Authorizes additional funds for the new standards for federal-subsidized school lunches.

Provides resources for schools and communities to utilize local farms and gardens to provide fresh produce.

Provides resources to increase nutritional quality of food provided by USDA

Increases access to drinking water in schools

Sets minimal standards for school wellness policies

Increases access

Increased the number of eligible children for school meal programs by 115,000

Uses census data to determine student need in high-poverty areas, rather than relying on paper applications.

Authorizes USDA to provide meals in more after-school programs in "high-risk" areas

Program monitoring

Requires school districts to be audited every 3 years to see if they have met nutrition standards

Requires easier access for students and parents about nutritional facts of meals

Improves recall procedures for school food

Provides training for school lunch providers

Was it her who crafted it, helped bring it before the legislative process?? Sure was reported that way..

Just sayin'
