Armed men at the administrative center for the Ansar al-Shariah militia, suspected to have led the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Benghazi consulate, first fired in the air to disperse the crowd, but eventually withdrew from the site with their weapons and vehicles after it was surrounded by waves of protesters shouting “No to militias.”

The revolution against Ghaddafi began in the universities. The interim government of Libya was run by the National Transitional Council (National Transitional Council - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), lead by Mahmoud Jibril who received a master's degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh (Mahmoud Jibril - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

While many Libyans are uneducated (particularly the religious fanatics), the leaders of the revolution were mostly educated outside of Libya at colleges in the U.S., the UK, and France. They are educated men. Jibril is the current prime minister of Libya. I think you've assumed that all Islamics are ignorant tribesmen living in the desert. In point of fact, the people behind the green revolution in Iran (one of whom is a friend of mine, an engineer who lives in Tehran), the revolution in Egypt, and the revolution in Libya were primarily college students with access to the internet.

Facebook and Twitter were used to coordinate protests and assemblies by these university students.

For instance, here's a sign from the Egyptian uprising:

You'll note it's neatly written in proper English with an Arabic subtext.

A lot of the signs from these uprisings were written in English because that was a way of communicating the goals of the uprising to the West via media coverage, twitter and facebook feeds. English is the language of trade and democracy.

I love the fact that our administration helped the people of Libya level the playing field, and depose a right wing terrorist dictator (without the lose of a single American military member).
