Let's kick Turkey out of NATO before we bail

Why should the US be allied with Turkey?
They were a valuable and worthy ally for decades in the Cold War. NATO is a relic, but Turkey did their part. We would be better served leaving NATO and leaving Europe to figure out their problems themselves.

Let’s kick Turkey out of NATO before we bail…
A quick vote should be taken to kick them out. If only we could kick them out of the UN too. We should kick all the Muslim countries out of the UN.
Besides the obvious problem that the U.S. cannot unilaterally kick any country out of either organization, and that Turkey just agreed to allowing Sweden to join NATO (thereby disarming its loudest critics inside the alliance), and the fact that Turkey is strategically important to Europe in many ways, the reality is that most of Turkey’s educated people want to join the European economic community. Many are quite open to the democratic values of Western European political culture, despite the influence of Islam. The Europeans certainly need Turkish cooperation to keep another refugee wave from the Near East pouring over its borders. Of course Turkey may very well never join the EU economic community, has its own severe problems and imperial memories / desires and its own unique culture.

The OP author said two years ago “Why are we even still in NATO? Hopefully Trump can get us out of there after he wins the 2024 election.” “Getting us out of there” precipitously would be a disastrous move and a huge gift to Russian dictator Putin at this crucial time, as well as to terrorist enemies in the Muslim world. This is certainly not the same as saying U.S. policy in NATO or toward Israel, the Near East and Ukraine has always been very wise.

In my opinion NATO needs a strong self-defense capacity and consciousness of its own, and the Russian attack on Ukraine is already making this clear to many Europeans. The Eurosceptic & authoritarian Polish Law & Justice Party just lost power to an alliance of parties seeking to improve relations with Western Europe, and Erdogan in Turkey may also suffer a defeat in time. All this could strengthen NATO dramatically, as will Sweden and Finland’s entry. European countries are certainly contributing more to their common defense since Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine.

It is also idiotic to say we should not only try to “kick the Muslim countries out the UN” but also then ourselves “bail” out of the UN. That’s the standard old John Birch Society line. That will not “Make America Great” but only gratify childish impulses of “MAGA” isolationists.

The UN is not a military alliance but an international organization that allows for cooperation in areas of agreement and airing of differences in other areas. Like the League of Nations it certainly may fail in its crucial task of preventing another World War due to forces beyond its control, but the U.S. already has veto power in the UN and it represents no threat to our way of life. It offers the U.S. many opportunities to exercise a positive influence outside our borders. The surest sign that we are heading to World War and disaster may be, as it was with the League of Nations, when major states entirely abandon participating in global organizations seeking to discuss and when possible resolve global problems diplomatically.

Ah. It's not the Turkish people, it's Erdogan.

Ofc Obama did try a regime change on him that failed. He has reason to be salty about that.

It's John Birch, and we should absolutely withdraw from the UN and kick them out of New York.

The CFR, too.

At least you know how to spell. So do I. Your other points (except your broad criticism of Erdogan) are — imo — as dumb today as they were when the John Birch Society originally raised them.

But thank you for reading my long comment.

---Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, has called for NATO to "seriously consider" Turkey's membership---

You do know NATO and the UN are two totally different things…right?

I'm walking back my stance on Turkey/NATO, but never on the UN and CFR.

Erdogan is a fucking tit but Turkey does a lot of good. No other country takes in so many refugees .
if he aint on our side he may end up seeking other friends.NAtO is a treaty and the more countries involved the better.
You are just a stupid shit kicker,
True that Erdogan did more to help the victims of the Maui fire than Biden did.
