I see foreign aid as a necessary evil if we want to remain as the worlds most dominant country. Whenever we have an issue with a country we give aid to, the first thing we now do is threaten to cut them off. For the tens of smaller countries that we send 100s of millions to, this would could literally lead to a collapse of their economy/country, so 99% of the time they immediately comply.

So now think if we weren't sending countries aid, and we didn't like what they were doing. We would then have to threaten with military force. And seeing how its a few times a month we threaten countries to cut off/reduce their aid, that would mean we would be threatening military action constantly. Not only would countries stop believing us, or actually believe the absurdity that we will bomb every country in the world, but they would know we simply cannot sustain that now with our debt and most of our active units in the middle east.

Without foreign aid, our strength around the world would immediately drop and we would become a laughing stock if we attempted to force countries to our will through threats of military action (which would be our only choice at that point).

So I guess the question is which would you prefer:

1) be the strongest nation on earth and give foreign aid
2) be a weak country and give no foreign aid
