Ross Douthat: The hole in Obamacare

As it is with many Leftist initiatives (e.g., Operation Head Start), the Left wants us to measure the Affordable Care Act (colloquially known as "Obamacare") by the presumably good intentions that energized its supporters when it was passed.

But as with Operation Head Start, seven years in, there are basically no measurable HEALTH BENEFITS coming out of this massive waste of borrowed money. And lest we forget, the issue is HEALTH, and not Health Insurance. Where are the dropping death rates from ANYTHING, improved infant mortality, and so on?

So we have, basically, half the country screeching their outrage that the repeal of Obamacare will result in thousands dying in the streets, while the real, hard evidence indicates that it has had NO MEASURABLE HEALTH BENEFIT.

In the Real World, such massive failure would likely result in the perpetrators - corporate or otherwise - dropping it and reverting to the status quo ante. For Government, not so much.

A very limited and simple OP, lacking long term data and the historical and on going evolution of all aspects of medicine, from preventative care to palliative care and everything in between, especially the cost before and after Obamacare.

Reform had been talked about for over a century, but nothing was done until the Democrats held the majority, and the effort to abort reform began before one patient was treated, one policy was written and one study was completed.

There are no atheists in a fox hole, and no family in American suffering serious illness and the massive costs incurred before the PPACA supporting the Ryan/Trump lack of good intentions.

Today's conservative is all about, "I got mine, fuck the rest of you". The debate on whether to repeal the PPACA and return to what went before is pure ideological 21st century bullshit - the debate needs to center on what is wrong and how to fix it - not a GD game. Ryan, McConnell and Trump have painted themselves into a corner, and blame the Democrats for their predicament; they need to STFU, turn out the lights on the political theater that has run for seven years, put our nation's people first and get to work.

In the real world pols are hired by the people to provide an environment the values Mr. Jefferson stated in the DoI:

"... all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

Ryan could start by leading by example, and repealing health care for each member of the H. or Rep. and their families.
