Krugman: GOP Austerity Causing Unemployment

State and local government spending has been declining. That has been shown from data compiled by the St Louis Fed. Hundreds of thousands of state and local employees have been laid off. Whether or not shell games are being played does not obviate this.

Unless you can show otherwise.

Ya--think? What did you expect??-- that unemployment in this country--should only be happening in the private sector?

The 868 billion dollar stimulus bill that was promised to create millions of private sector jobs--turned into saving government workers jobs. It temporarily worked for a time--but now that money has run out--and YES those government workers jobs that were saved by borrowed and spent taxpayer dollars are now getting their pink slips.

You aren't suggesting that we borrow more from China to keep government workers employed are you?

Focus!

Before you go off all half-cocked, ranting and raving and everything, perhaps you can show us where I have a normative statement here about the proper level of government employees.

Now, if you want to be Mr. Angry Conservative, fine. I might even agree with you. But this discussion is about whether or not state and local government spending has declined. If you have something substantive to offer on whether or not state and local government has declined, I would love to hear it.

It has declined, but not to the point where overall government spending has declined. What has declined is the increase in projected government spending.

That does not meet my definition of austerity.

I heard today that the war in Iraq has cost, so far, around 3 trillion dollars.

Where were all these libertarians during the Bush administration.

Oh, right. Silent.

They were making just as much noise as they are now. Would you like me to link to Ron Paul's comments on the wars, or will you just admit you failed to score a point in this attempt to make the other side look bad?

I was talking about the libertarians that post here. Perhaps I should have put libertarian in quotes. :eusa_hand:

Wrong, yet again.

I was not only against the stupid wars, I was also against USAPATRIOT act, the creation of the DHS and TSA....Ask anyone around here who knows me....There are plenty of 'em who'll tell ya.

Now, tell us what was the percentage of police statist democrat goons voted in favor of those travesties?

I already know....G'head and Google for it yourself.

You'll have to over look ravi she just doesn't get. She's to busy defending obama to see the obvious.

Converts are often the strongest zealots and most strident of enemies to their former religions and philosophies, often blinding them far worse than those who never left their pre-conceptions.

I agree completely. And to be fair, I'm probably harder on the right than the left because that's where I came from. But I still generally agree with the libertarians more so than the statists. I just don't believe that the libertarians are always right and the collectivists always wrong.
Here's something else you might give a moment's worth of thought.

Perhaps the avalanche of tax revenue that flowed into the bureaucracy during the housing bubble created an artificially high demand for bureaucrats as well...Perhaps all the "stimulus" spending, that ended up just being a big fat heap of political payola to those bureaucrats, has kept that bubble artificially inflated.

What makes those pencil pushers and paper shufflers immune from all this "shared sacrifice" we keep hearing about?

The Patriot Act's necessity has run it's course. I do like the updating of wiretap laws to tap the person, not the item, but the rest should be left to expire or be repealed like the sedition act passed during WW1.

GOP Austerity Causing Unemployment

This is only news to the right wing. Course, they're not really sure what to do after both their policies failed.

The rich hoarded their tax breaks.

Corporations created jobs overseas.

Now their "think tank" is outta gas.

The rich hoarded their tax breaks.

How does one "hoard" a tax break? Is there a particular method of storage that prevents spoilage? Why is it they do not get more back than they paid in then if they've been essentially 'storing them up'? Why do the bottom 40% of those who had taxes withheld receive more back than they paid in?

Corporations created jobs overseas.

And you continue to whine and cry about this like a deflowered virgin, but you never ask yourself why it is happening this way beyond to say "they make a bigger profit over there." Yes, this is true you poor little blind and lost waif unable to detect the truth 2 inches out of your grasp. They do make a better profit overseas. Now... WHY? Seriously consider what it is that makes them so much cheaper than we over here? What can we do to compete in the global market where all wealth and labor is portable save that which tied to geography?

Hmmm? Be careful not to burn your fingers in the deep fat fryer... you need that for work.

Now their "think tank" is outta gas.

We are not the ones recycling the same ideas circulated under Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and FDR. We are not binding our thoughts to the ideals of Eugene V. Debs, Upton Sinclair and Margaret Sanger. We have left the Guilded Age and early progressive age when the ideas of the left where last fresh and new, only too quickly to spoil on the shelf, reeking of failure and ineffectiveness like a dead skunk next to the road.

Soon... VERY soon actually, you will begin to see these 'out of gas' ideas being implemented for the first time. Only now, they are starting to slowly leak out around the coffer dam that the socialists have thrown up to try and prevent the sea change that is coming. The cultural tide is rapidly going out, like the Bay of Fundy, and with it... all the failed ideologies of the progressive left and collectivist thought, leaving the wreckage of their refuse behind in the ebb of the tide of history and society.

Thank God that your kind will probably live to see the last of your 'mighty achievements' crumble and die before your eyes. A fitting punishment I do believe. Positively ironic.

The next time you convince me that you were against Dubya's policies will be the first time.

This chart shows yearly changes in government spending for goods and services.

As you can see, the numbers crossed over to the negative at the beginning of the year, and have been declining ever since. According to Krugman, the numbers correspond to slower job growth.

If government spending is necessary to sustain the recovery, is it crazy to pursuing cuts in spending now, while unemployment is still about 9%?

If government spending is the only thing that can sustain a recovery. Were fucked.

Translation:

I am not interested in proving you wrong enough to do the legwork, so I'll just continue to make the allegation till you get angry enough to shut me down or prove me wrong, thereby wasting your time in the process... not mine.

Fair assessment, Ravi?
