A conservative billionaire who opposes government meddling in business has bought a rare commodity: the right to interfere in faculty hiring at a publicly funded university.

A foundation bankrolled by Libertarian businessman Charles G. Koch has pledged $1.5 million for positions in Florida State University's economics department. In return, his representatives get to screen and sign off on any hires for a new program promoting "political economy and free enterprise."


Traditionally, university donors have little official input into choosing the person who fills a chair they've funded. The power of university faculty and officials to choose professors without outside interference is considered a hallmark of academic freedom.



Under the agreement with the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, however, faculty only retain the illusion of control. The contract specifies that an advisory committee appointed by Koch decides which candidates should be considered. The foundation can also withdraw its funding if it's not happy with the faculty's choice or if the hires don't meet "objectives" set by Koch during annual evaluations.

Building a hospital is far, far different than establishing a university chair.

Grants to universities have been withdrawn by their benefactors due to the funds being used in a manner that was unintended by the grantee.

That's different than leftist ideologues who protest the politics of the benefactor, a benefactor who BTW is a libertarian who supports reproductive rights.

The Kochs are well known philanthropists. Shame on the leftists for injecting politics by elevating their narrow worldview over the well being of others.

Good - Hundreds of black kids receive an education and go on to lead productive, prosperous lives, many of which may not have had the opportunity had the donation not been made.

Frankly, had I been a poor black kid in the ghetto with little prospects, and an old racist offered to fund my college education, no damn way would I have turned it down.

Now that the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has accepted a $25 million donation from Charles and David Koch, at least one Ivy League professor is worried sick and a bunch of leftists have taken to Twitter to express their rage.

Marybeth Gasman, a higher education professor at the University of Pennsylvania claimed that the UNCF – a charitable organization dedicated to helping black people get college degrees – is “wrong” to accept this particular $25 million to help black people get college degrees, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Gasman bellowed that Koch organizations have been “deeply affiliated with the Tea Party.” She alleges that Tea Party leaders want to weaken the political interests of black Americans.

Inside Higher Ed suggests that the wrath about the $25 million gift arises because critics worry that the scholarships will favor students who share the largely conservative and libertarian principles of Charles and David Koch.

The plan for the $18.5 million UNCF/Koch Scholars Program is to provide tuition assistance to “exemplary students with demonstrated financial need and an interest in the study of how entrepreneurship, economics, and innovation contribute to well-being for individuals, communities, and society.”​
