Plane crashes into building at Mid-Continent
WICHITA, Kan. — Emergency crews are on scene of a plane crash at Mid-Continent Airport.

Reports indicate a small plane hit the north building of FlightSafety International at the airport. People are possibly trapped inside, but injuries are unknown.

KAKE News has learned the plane had just taken off and was trying to return to the airport when the crash happened.

The plane lost an engine and was returning to the airport when it crashed. 10 people are unaccounted for. Two have been taken by ambulance in critical condition.

Now 5 unaccounted for, 5 injured, and 2 dead. The plane was carrying just 1 person, according to reports. Part of the building's roof has collapsed and building declared unstable.

KSN has confirmed from the FAA that a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 200 lost an engine on takeoff from Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport. The plane was trying to return to the runway when it crashed.

Information about the pilot, any passengers or the destination of the aircraft is not yet known.

Yeah, the engine failure was a preliminary, report.

A King Air is a pretty good-sized 'small' plane.

Navy uses a version called the C-12 for transport of VIPs and other minor travel. A little bigger than the T-44 version that was used for multi-engine training. It's a bit big for one person tho.

Well, this may put a new twist on things...


The crash is the latest in a string of incidents at the airport. In December, an avionics technician was arrested after a months-long undercover sting when he allegedly tried to drive a van filled with inert explosives onto the tarmac in a plot prosecutors say was intended to kill as many people as possible. Then in January, an Oklahoma man rammed his pickup truck through a security gate at the airport. In September, the airport conducted a large-scale disaster exercise featuring the mock crash of a 737 aircraft.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said it is "too early to rule anything out" about the cause of Thursday's crash and confirmed the FBI is assisting in the investigation, but stressed the agency's protocol is to respond to "any and all plane crashes at airports."
