JUST IN: Chip Roy Blasts New Bipartisan Tax Bill, Calls It A 'Mistake For The Country'

People use the term “fiscal conservative” to mean a variety of things, so let me suggest that a fiscal conservative policy approach:

  • A balanced budget is ideal
  • Deficit spend only in the face of national-level problems, like war, recession, natural disasters.
  • When the economy is in recovery, use the budget surplus to pay down the debt and to help finance long term budgetary needs. (Like Social Security.)
  • Cutting taxes during a recovery and running a deficit is not a tax cut at all, it is just moving the taxes to the future, and must be avoided.
On this basis, the last fiscally conservative administration was the Clinton Administration. No Republican administration since and including the Reagan Administration has been fiscally conservative.

To emphasize the point, the common Republican approach of cutting taxes and financing that via deficit spending is the furthest thing from fiscal conservatism.
