People use the term “fiscal conservative” to mean a variety of things, so let me suggest that a fiscal conservative policy approach:
To emphasize the point, the common Republican approach of cutting taxes and financing that via deficit spending is the furthest thing from fiscal conservatism.
- A balanced budget is ideal
- Deficit spend only in the face of national-level problems, like war, recession, natural disasters.
- When the economy is in recovery, use the budget surplus to pay down the debt and to help finance long term budgetary needs. (Like Social Security.)
- Cutting taxes during a recovery and running a deficit is not a tax cut at all, it is just moving the taxes to the future, and must be avoided.
To emphasize the point, the common Republican approach of cutting taxes and financing that via deficit spending is the furthest thing from fiscal conservatism.
