Why is that something to be proud of? The fact that we are so wealthy, yet have such poverty to rival third world countries SHOULD be a source of shame.

Here's the thing. We had it right for a while.
After the New Deal, but before Reagan, we had it right. The rich paid confiscatory taxes, when they died, their heirs did not inherit all of their wealth, just some of it. 33% of workers belong to unions and fair wages were the norm. During this time, we built fantastic infrastructure projects, we had an economy that was the envy of the world, we had a real, honest to God functioning middle class.
And then the Republicans fucked it all up.

The problem I described happened because the Koch brothers convinced the GOP (and to a lesser degree the Democrats) that government should side with the rich and corporations instead of workers and consumers.

How could any of us older folks forget the Women's lib movement? What they taught was that men were worthless. All a woman needs a man for is a sperm donor. Women should not be subservient to their male counterpart. A real woman doesn't need any man around. They can raise their children just fine without them. Get rid of those men in your lives.
Well the Democrats won that battle. We have less people getting married today, and more single-parent homes, particularly in the black community. Single parent households are directly related to poverty, yet the Democrats blame Republicans for people still being poor today.
