After talks with Putin and Lavrov, Kerry announced the United States' new Syria policy. It excludes a "regime change" and rejects the "opposition" groups' demand for Assad's resignation. The following article, however, translates his words not correct. Kerry said that the US and its partners do not seek a regime change but do not believe that Assad will be able to govern Syria in the future.
"After talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry claimed that the United States are not seeking a regime change in Syria.
“The United States and its partners are not seeking regime change in Syria,” Kerry said in a news conference inside the Kremlin. He however emphasized that the U.S. believes President Assad cannot remain the leader of Syria in the future.
This statement however shows a change of outlook when in the years since 2011, the U.S. were adamant for the immediate removal of President Assad from power. They have called for this ever since till now.
“Despite the different positions of our countries, we have shown that Russia and the United States are moving in the same direction,” Kerry said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the talks “substantive.”
“No one should be forced to choose between a dictator and being plagued by terrorists,” Kerry said. He stated that the Islamist rebel demands that Assad must leave immediately as a “nonstarting position, obviously.”
“The world is better off when Russia and the U.S. work together”, he added, calling Obama and Putin’s current cooperation a “sign of maturity.”
“There is no policy of the United States, per se, to isolate Russia,” Kerry stressed."
