BEIJING: China has virtually slammed the door on Japanese PM Shinzo Abe saying he would not be welcome if he wanted to visit the country. The foreign ministry said Chinese leaders do not wish to meet Abe, suggesting there will be no attempt to thaw the frozen relationship.

"The Chinese people don't welcome such a Japanese leader, and Chinese leaders will unquestionably not speak with him either," foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.

"Abe himself has shut the door for possible dialogue with Chinese leaders," Qin said.

"Abe needs to admit his mistakes to the government and people of China, cut loose from the past and make a new start," he said.

Both China and South Korea are raging over Abe's recent visit to Yasukuni shrine, the Shinto-style in Tokyo, which honours what Japan regards as heroes of World War II. Its two neighbours consider them "war criminals".

"They are the people who masterminded, launched and carried out the war of aggression against China," Qin said of the Japanese war criminals on Monday. "Their hands are covered with the blood of people. They are fascists. They are the Nazis of Asia."

Abe is due to meet Chinese leaders in international forum including G-20 and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meet, which Beijing is hosting in October 2014. Asked if Abe is not welcome to attend this meet, Qin said China will go by the APEC rules.

"Abe's hypocrisy in his claims of prioritizing relations with China and hopes for dialogue with the Chinese leaders has been fully revealed," Qin said at a regular briefing.
