The 13.4 MW plant is the latest in a growing number of swimming solar projects.

Solar PV is rapidly expanding its footprint. Panels are coming to more rooftops, industrial parks, carports and even backpacks. It’s also, increasingly, being installed on top of water.

Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation announced this week that Kyocera TCL Solar, a joint venture between the two companies, will develop a 13.4-megawatt floating solar power plant in Japan’s Yamakura Dam reservoir near Tokyo. The plant will become the largest floating solar installation in the world.

The project, made up of 50,000 modules, will generate 15,635 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, which is roughly enough to power 4,700 households. Century Tokyo Leasing will provide the project financing and Kyocera Group will supply the solar modules and related equipment in addition to construction, operation and maintenance.

Hey, no bitching about taking up land or destroying wild life area. This would simply float on our lakes, ponds and oceans. Probably the best way to power our society outside of putting it on our home. I could see how putting a massive version of this over an ocean would be challenging with violent storms, but we could tie it to sea floor and make it so it doesn't move but a few meters. Imagine 50 years from now there's a 5gw ocean solar island??? Wouldn't that be cool.

What is cool is lighting a match and having clean burning natural gas boil water, heat the house, fuel the car, and even cooler? It can happen today, and even BETTER! YOU CAN AFFORD IT!!

The trash truck that came by my house on Wednesday is powered by CNG, now THAT is COOL! He was probably thrilled by the solar panels on my garage roof, but I was certainly thrilled to see how heavy trucks are now running off natural gas and it isn't even one of Matthews "might", "could", "potential", "a student in a lab says" routine! The technology is already here, saving the planet, and we can afford it!! Kudos to natural gas for being not only COOL but DOABLE TODAY!!

Fish are wildlife too. As are the myriad of life forms that inhabit those waters.
Go ahead and block the sun from that ecosystem..
It's groovy, it's solar, it's NOT hydrocarbons! :slap:

When are you going to show us pictures of your electric car and your home that runs on solar?
