Stimulus funds pending as Legislature winds down: Budget | adn.com

JUNEAU -- With just one week left before the Alaska Legislature adjourns for the year, the conflict between Gov. Sarah Palin and lawmakers over taking federal economic stimulus money is the dominant issue left.

In fact, legislative leaders don't seem intent on doing a whole lot else this year.

Just nine of the 419 bills introduced have passed through the full Legislature so far, and while many more will pass in the frenzied final week, there is little desire to make major state policy changes in what Senate President Gary Stevens conceded is basically a session of preserving the status quo.

There's still a chance that bills will pass increasing the state minimum wage, requiring parental notification when a teenager gets an abortion, expanding Alaska children's health insurance for lower-income families and stopping the state, including the Permanent Fund, from investing in companies doing business in Sudan, the African country whose government has been blamed for genocidal killing in the Darfur region.

Legislators will also vote Thursday on approving the governor's appointees, including attorney general Wayne Anthony Ross, who has proven controversial but is still likely to be confirmed.

Palin herself will be leaving Alaska this week to attend the Vanderburgh County Right to Life dinner in Evansville, Ind. on Thursday, as well as an event for special-needs children. Fairbanks Republican Rep. Jay Ramras questioned her leaving town right at the end of the session, when critical decisions are being made.

"There are some concerns (in the Capitol) about the focus of our chief executive because she's taken a speaking engagement in Indiana for a 36-hour period with only 72 hours left in the legislative session," Ramras said.

Odd, I don't recall a single thread from you about Obama spending as little time as possible in DC, where HE belongs.

Let's try to have a single standard, huh?

That's because he's running for president of the world.

She's hanging on by a thread to Alaska.

Like Ted Stevens, yep......

Obama just HAD to be in Denver to sign the stimulus bill. That Jay Leno appearance was an absolute MUST as well.

I think it's great that someone who lives in New York is so concerned about Alaska. Do you send a portion of your income to helping the poor in Alaska? I'm sure you do. God Bless you.

How hilarious that each of you have to say "Well, Obama this or Obama that" yet you can't say a single word in defense of Palin.

And Obama isn't going to fundraisers while Congress is voting on something that's cirtical to the survival of this country much like Palin is doing while the Alaska legislature is voting on the stimulus bill.

Palin thinks raising money for people who never voted for her is more important than raising money for people who did. I can't wait til she runs against Obama - she's going to lose SO BADLY. It will be worse than Clinton/Dole.

Given that she has 30 days in which to sign any legislation that passes in the last 72 hours and that until then there isn't much she can do, I see no reason for her to hang arond doing nothing while she waits on the state legislature to get its act together.

hmm Survival of the country? You mean like when they voted on whether or not Iranian Guard was a terrorist group and Obama was too busy being worshipped on the campaign trail?

If David didn't hate Christians so much, he'd be a damned good republican.

And David has left the building after having it pointed out to him that he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Sarah Palin will NOT be the Republican nominee in 2012.

Well--like Obama she is only a cell phone call away. You know the "call me if you need me." If the POTUS can do it, so can a govenor.

Palin doesn't need any defending--she hasn't done anything wrong. Here you are trying to lambast her for leaving town, after she has already worked on the budget, & the state legislature is fully aware of her wishes regarding stimulus money. They need to vote on it. Then she may or may not sign off on it. So she's done her work prior to leaving town. While the guy you voted for, your POTUS rushed a 787 BILLION dollar stimulus bill through the senate & congress, & then they all signed off on it without reading it. They didn't even know the AIG bonuses were included in the stimulus bill.

I think your comparisons are a little one-sided here--& only in an effort to gain other political potheads to again jump on Palin for absolutely NOTHING. You must be scared to death of her to go this far out on a limb.

The only person who has been consistently absent from the job, is none other than Barack Obama--who up until recently he has been busy campaigning--making appearances on Jay Leno, insulting special needs children, bowing to Saudi Arabia royalty & giving I-pods to the Queen of England. Some comparision if you ask me.

So you're suggesting that Governor Palin step down as governor, because someone on the opposite side of the country thinks she is doing a bad job?
