Well....Jerusalem, actually.

It what can only be considered as counter-intuitive to Israel's public relations.....and tourism....interests, the city management of Jerusalem has pursued the taxation of world famous churches....sort of.

With the result.....

1. "Jerusalem ... to Close Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Against centuries of precedent, Holy City authorities pursue $186 million in church taxes.

2. ....the leaders of Jerusalem’s churches closed the doors of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Sunday in a show of united protest. The dramatic decision comes in response to moves by Jerusalem authorities to begin collecting tens of millions of dollars in taxes from churches, as well as proposed legislation to confiscate church-owned land.

3. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre—considered by many Christians to be the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, tomb and resurrection—is jointly managed by a cadre of Orthodox and Catholic churches.

4. It is one of the most-visited sites in Israel,...

5. ...the municipality’s new policy a “systematic campaign against the churches and the Christian community in the Holy Land,” according to The Jerusalem Post.

6. “These actions breach existing agreements and international obligations which guarantee the rights and the privileges of the churches, in what seems as an attempt to weaken the Christian presence in Jerusalem.”

7. The city property tax, called arnona, targets businesses and offices belonging to the historic churches in Jerusalem. Houses of worship will be exempt from taxation, but all other church properties will be fair game.

8. The Jerusalem Municipality has excellent and respectful connections with every church in the city, and it will continue protecting their freedom of religion,” stated city leaders,...."

9. I would be remiss not to point out that, for the US Constitution, the most quoted source was the Bible. Established in the original writings of our Founding Fathers we find that in Ezra 7:24 we see where they established the tax exempt status of the church:
Ezra 7:24 “Also we certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers, porters, Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.”

10. It is questionable whether offices, hotels, business of the clergy would be covered.

Hmm. You do know that if you disapprove of something that Israel does it makes you an anti-semite and possibly a secret Muslim?

not enough information and more discussion. To clarify the "exempt" status
of the levites and priests------there is a reason. The Levites and Priests were
LANDLESS. way back then. It was an agrarian society. all "tribes" had
permanent ascribed hereditary land except the Levites. The tax issue here
SEEMS to be in relation to land------as far as I have been able to ascertain---it does
not refer to the church itself. it refers to extensive land and business holding of
the Churches. The other information that would interest me-----is
whether or not the churches in Jerusalem were tax free under Jordanian or Ottoman rule ???? -----or the issue as to "services" In Islamic lands-----
"others" ie --- dhimmis---traditionally did their own services. ----public health,
mail, security, etc etc. Ie they were, conveniently, sitting ducks for the muslims.

oh-----you do not have to think-----you parrot canards. I grew up in a town
full of people like you. There was silly word for just about everyone and
everything and a silly firmly held belief. The first theological discussion I ever
heard was between a protestant school mate and a catholic school mate----
we were all six year old first graders. AN ACCUSATION protestant to catholic--------YOU PRAY TO MARY !!!!!!!! I, the jew in the group----actually
knew all about Mary-----I had attended protestant sunday school--------but the
FIGHT was alien to me-------------they argued on and on.
"the chosen"-------an interesting concept that fascinates protestants. The word
from which "chosen" is translated------to choose---"" L'vachor"" turns out to
have all kinds of connotations in Hebrew and especially in the book of genesis.----
want another chuckle?.
