Many Catholics use the term Religious when referring to those in the consecrated life.

No it is not true

Nun is a position in the church like Priest
Sister is a title like Father

Sister Agnes or Father Murphy
Not Nun Agnes or Priest Murphy

I am wife, mother, teacher. The formal way of addressing me is "Mrs."

One of my favorite elementary school teachers was a nun. The formal way of addressing her was "Sister Mary Elizabeth."

Like wife, mother, teacher are careers, nun is a career. Formal address for a nun is 'Sister'.

ETA: What rightwinger said.

The OP's question was what term is preferred and what Catholics v Protestants say about that.

As for how to address an individual nun, I agree that she should be called Sister.

ok

but my question was less about how to address them

more how to refer to them

in german:

nun is Nonne
sister is Schwester

and i only use Schwester and never Nonne.

Catholics believe that all non-Catholics who profess to believe in Jesus are apostate protestants.

I call them nuns. I've never addressed any as 'Sister', since I don't meet many in formal circumstances.
