Space monkey ‘big step’: Iran minister
Wed, Jan 30, 2013 - APING NASA? : A previous attempt in 2011 by the Islamic republic to launch a monkey into space failed, but Tehran has launched probes containing a rat, turtles and worms
Iran took a “big step” toward sending astronauts into space by 2020, successfully launching a monkey above the Earth’s atmosphere, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told state television. Washington however said if the report on the launch was true, then Iran might have violated a UN resolution banning it from any activity relating to ballistic missile technology.

Arabic-language channel al-Alam and other Iranian news agencies said the monkey returned alive on Monday after travelling in a capsule to an altitude of 120km for a sub-orbital flight. “This success is the first step toward man conquering space and it paves the way for other moves,” Vahidi said, but added that the process of putting a human into space would be a lengthy one. “Today’s successful launch follows previous successes we had in launching [space] probes with other living creatures [on board],” he said, referring to the launch in the past of a rat, turtles and worms into space. “The monkey which was sent in this launch landed safely and alive and this is a big step for our experts and scientists,” Vahidi said.

Iranian state television showed still pictures of the capsule and of a monkey being fitted with a vest and then placed in a device similar to a child’s car seat. A previous attempt in 2011 by the Islamic republic to put a monkey into space failed. No official explanation was ever given. A defense ministry statement quoted by Iranian media said earlier that Iran had “successfully launched a capsule, codenamed Pishgam (Pioneer), containing a monkey and recovered the shipment on the ground intact.” It did not give details on the timing or location of the launch.

Earlier this month Iran announced its intention to launch a monkey into orbit as part of “preparations for sending a man into space,” which it aims to do by 2020. Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad has indicated on several occasions the intention to launch an astronaut for “observation” purposes by Iran’s scientists. A deputy minister for science, Mohammad Mehdinejad-Nouri, said in October 2011 that human space flight was a “strategic priority” for the country.

Maybe Iran Didn't Launch a Monkey Into Space After All
Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, Remember way back to Monday when Iran surprised everyone by announcing that it had managed to send a monkey into space and bring it back alive? Upon closer review, it appears as though the Islamic republic's space breakthrough was a rather poorly staged fake.
The skepticism began to mount almost immediately after Iran announced the news. For starters, word of what would have been a major achievement for the nation's fledgling space program came only via state-run media and was never independently confirmed elsewhere. The initial report gave only vague details and provided no info on the timing or location of the launch or the landing. But those doubts then multiplied many times over after the world got a better look at the monkey that was greeted as something of a hero upon its return (or, I suppose, "return"). The British media is largely leading the charge on this one, so we'll let the Telegraph explain what appears to be a rather dead giveaway:

The monkey triumphantly presented to the nation’s media in his own silk tuxedo appeared markedly different to the creature that was pictured strapped into a rocked prior to its launch into space. That animal had light fur and a distinctive red mole over its right eye. But the monkey that returned was dark haired and had no mole. Dismissing as remote the possibility that space flight had a dramatic physical affect on the Iranian monkey, international observers have concluded that either the original animal died in space or that the launch—timed to coincide with the 34th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution—simply never took place.

The Times of London, which also spotted the missing mole, also notes that the flight itself wasn't carried live on state television, and the video released later of the rocket that allegedly carried the monkey was less than convincing. If the successful mission had been the real deal, it would have represented the biggest breakthrough yet for the Iranian space program. It also would signal potential international trouble because the technology used to launch a rocket into space can also be used in ballistic misisles.

Monkeys attack village in eastern Indonesia
January 30, 2013 – A mob of wild monkeys has gone on a rampage in a village in eastern Indonesia, entering houses and attacking residents. Seven people were injured, including one who is in critical condition.
Ambo Ella, a spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, says the surprise attack by about 10 monkeys happened in Toddang Pulu village.

He said Wednesday a 16-year-old boy was badly bitten in the attack Monday and is being treated at the hospital

He believes the troop came from a nearby forest protected by a local tribe. It’s unclear why the monkeys, which are usually afraid of humans and flee when they hear human voices, emerged and attacked.

Local authorities are investigating to find out what prompted the attack, which caused panic among villagers.

McCain compares Iranian leader to monkey; draws GOP charge of racism
4 Feb.`13 : Always one to speak -- or Tweet -- his mind, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Monday made a joke comparing Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a monkey, something one Republican congressman charged was “racist.”
“So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space - wasn't he just there last week?” McCain said in a tweet that also linked to a story about Iran launching a monkey into space. Some didn’t take so kindly to the not-so-diplomatic quip, prompting McCain, 76, to respond: “Re: Iran space tweet - lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?”

Seeing that, Michigan congressman Rep. Justin Amash, 32, shot back. “Maybe you should wisen up & not make racist jokes,” Amash tweeted. Not everyone on the right agreed with Amash. Conservative John Podhoretz, for example, Tweeted this: "How dare McCain say something demeaning & disparaging abt the foremost anti-Semite on the planet." And this: "So...it's defend-the-Jew-hater-from-the-war-hero day."

It’s not the first time McCain’s made a joke about Iran that landed him in some hot water. During his run for president in 2007, McCain sang about bombing the country. Asked by a GOP primary voter when the U.S. would send an “air-mail message to Tehran,” McCain said, “That old Beach Boys’ song, ‘Bomb Iran?’ Bomb, bomb, bomb—, anyway.” McCain’s response then as now? It’s just a joke -- "get a life.” “When veterans are together, veterans joke,” McCain said at the time. “And I was with veterans and we were joking. And if somebody can’t understand that, my answer is, ‘Please, get a life.’”

McCain Jokes Ahmadinejad Wouldn’t Be First Monkey in Space
February 4, 2013 – Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) tweeted a joke on Monday poking fun at Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, comparing him to the monkey that Iran recently claimed to have launched into space.
“So Ahmadinejad wants to be first Iranian in space -- wasn't he just there last week? ‘Iran launches monkey into space,’” McCain tweeted on Monday, linking to a Yahoo News story about the purported Iranian space launch.

Iran claimed to have successfully launched a monkey into space on January 28, saying it was a sign that the country had made significant progress on long-range rocketry. McCain followed up with another tweet urging followers to “lighten up.”

“Re: Iran space tweet -- lighten up folks, can't everyone take a joke?” he said. McCain’s joke was responding to a pronouncement from Ahmadinejad that the Iranian was ready to go into space himself. “I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists,” Ahmadinejad said on Monday, according to Reuters.

Something the US did decades ago? How impressive!

Yup.

And it seems the US has almost completely stopped the space program in favor of invading countries and killing people they don't like.

By the way..this was a politically brilliant move.

And it allowed for testing an advanced nuclear warhead delivery system without testing an advanced nuclear warhead delivery system.

Ahmadinejad jokes he'd volunteer to go to space
February 4th, 2013 - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad joked he is so serious about making sure Iran advances technologically that he'd volunteer to go to space for his country if needed.
"I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists,” he said after meeting Monday with Iranian space scientists, according to the semi-official Mehr News Agency. The president's comments, made in jest, came a week after the state's semi-official Fars News Agency said Iran had "sent a monkey to the orbit, brought it back to the Earth and retrieved the animal and the relevant data successfully."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad looks at a space monkey Monday on Iran's National Day of Space Technology in Tehran.

While the reported primate in space caused a celebration in Tehran, the monkey business – if it happened – didn't play well in Washington. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters last week that while she saw pictures of "the poor little monkey," the United States doesn't "have any way to confirm this (happened), one way or another."

"But our concerns with Iran's development of space launch vehicle technologies are obviously well-known: Any space launch vehicle capable of placing an object in orbit is directly relevant to the development of long-range ballistic missiles," Nuland told reporters. The chatter about Ahmadinejad caused a bit of a problem for Sen. John McCain, who caught flak on Twitter for drawing a parallel between the Iranian president's statement and the alleged monkey mission.
