My take is that the Democrats are hoping to revive the infighting of the conservatives regarding immigration. That worked in the last election against McCain and got the topic off the war situation, which was improving at the time. They are hoping for a repeat, I'm hoping it doesn't work.
And this, I think cannot be left out of the equation in a full and honest debate.
It is obvious, at least to me, that most responsible Americans, both Democrat and Republican, both left and right, understand that we cannot simply accept all the poor people of the world who want to come here without reducing America to something like the miserable places they came from.
But it is also obvious, at least to me, that the Democrat leadership in Washington WANT all those new sympathetic voters on their side and they want them as quickly as that can be accomplished. Whatever other consequences result from that is not and does not appear to be of much concern to them on this or any othe issue they support.
And it is also obvious, at least to me, that they will be pushing this or Cap and Trade right away to keep the focus off the hugely unpopular healthcare restructure they just passed.
I started a thread on Cap and Trade at the same time as this one. So far it has been mostly ignored. My guess is they'll do that before this because it is difficult to understand and doesn't generate the same emotional response as healthcare or illegal immigration.
But is is finally obvious, at least to me, that those three issue: healthcare, Illegal Immigration, and Cap and Trade, if not handled responsibly and with the interest of a strong America in mind, they will forever change the America we have known and loved into something quite different that none of us are going to like.
