It sounds like it could be Lazy Day by Spanky and our Gang. There is a part of the chorus that goes Lazy Day, Lazy Day, Lazy Day for you and me which fits your pattern.

That pattern is 3-3-7 syllables; the one I remember is 4-4-6

Is there any syncopation in the chorus pattern or all the notes essentially quarter notes?

Essentially quarter notes. The sixth note on the third line could be a half note; I believe that it was held a bit longer than the others. That would fit into the 4/4 beat.

I asked my cousin, who was a professional rock drummer from the 70's until fairly recently, but he drew a blank too. Maybe I'm composing, not remembering.

Jackson 5's "ABC"? I'm not going to look it up for the year, but I believe it was 70s.

The lyrics are similar in pattern, but "ABC" is too fast and bouncy; the song I'm thinking of is more mellow.
