I now support a consumption tax over a flat tax......

What's the rate going to be, dummy?

Have you any exempted purchases?

Have you a place that you can point to where a consumption tax
Has worked?
Try State and local sales taxes.....consumption tax.
Which weighs heavily on the poor and the middle class and not on the wealthy, thus the reason for the Federal tax to offset what the States do.

Taxes to run this Nation have to be evaluated and viewed ON THE WHOLE, including what it costs to run our State governments....

When we talk about the Corporate income taxes paid compared to all the other Nations in the world, we include what the Corporations have to pay in total taxes compared to other nations in TOTAL TAXES and the Corporate State income tax is INCLUDED in that comparison, AS IT SHOULD BE compared with our overall taxes as citizens to our government, both State and Federal.

If you do not include home purchases and Land purchases and stock purchases in your consumption tax, then you ONCE AGAIN are hitting the poor and Middle class with the highest percentage of their earnings in taxes for necessities while not taxing the wealthiest on what they spend most of their money on, which is inhumane....and totally unfair to the middle class.

It seems that a lot of the questions and errant claims in this thread could be cleared up with a mass reading of The Fair Tax...

The best thing I see coming from The Fair Tax is that tax evasion becomes a thing of the past.

The second best thing the IRS becomes unnecessary.

You should read how the law would work with those currently living in poverty. It pays their taxes.

...and a pimp buying a $300,000 pays a big chunk for taxes.

A consumption tax is the worst way to go, it is different from the fair tax, which I am also against, from the top of my head to the tip of my toes.

the consumption tax is a regressive tax and taxes the poor and middle class at a higher percentage of total income than the wealthiest and the wealthy. It is REVERSE ROBIN HOOD.

a 25% tax added to the State's sales tax will HURT the States collecting taxes for their own States...

And it will slow down purchases, thus slow down our economy.

Also, how would you qualify those for services that are very poor, how would the gvt means test, without knowing and having incomes.....there are many programs that means test? Then in addition there are caps on what you can put in 401k's and all kinds of things like this....

I have not read the book, but from what I can see...this has not been thought through...

No it doesn't....the wealthiest can just make their big purchases in countries they visit and avoid the consumption taxes here...

The BIGGEST mistake this nation ever made was making it where everybody had a stake in the game as you all say.

We spent much less as a Nation when ONLY THE VERY WEALTHIEST paid income taxes....the very wealthiest had the ears of congress and kept spending down when it was only their money paying for things.....

and only since the very wealthiest have seen the BIGGEST TAX BREAKS in our HISTORY, from 90% down to 70% down to 65% down to 50% down to 39% and capital gains down from 20% to 15% or whatever the heck it is now....and putting the Nation's tax burden on to the middle class has KILLED THIS NATION's middle class.

I think no matter where it's shipped from, they still pay the consumption tax.

To my knowledge, The Fair Tax is a consumption tax...proposed to be 23%.

hmm interesting points here... Perhaps it would have to be a mixed system; more like a sales tax for consumers in lieu of income taxes, but leaving business, investment, and import vein taxes as they are? (Though it would be nice to lower business taxes a hair, I feel they are a bit high.)

Or perhaps a split consumption... The tax is X% on the purchase; some percent from the purchaser and some percent from the seller?

That may be similar to the 9-9-9 plan proposed by Herman Cain. It's a mixture of income tax, consumption tax something or other...a precursor to The Fair Tax.

What an utterly retarded concept.

A consumption tax would mean people would be less likely to buy things which means less jobs for people making and selling things, which in turn will increase expenses when they all go on welfare.

Here's a concept- MAKE THE FUCKING RICH PAY THEIR FAIR SHARE. Reinvest that money that will be wasted on bullshit like Dressage horsies and mansions into schools and infrastructure that will make us more competitive.

Let's see....where's the line between people who don't pay their 'fair share' and those that do.

Homeless
Poverty stricken Poor
Working Part Time Poor
Working Hourly Wages Poor
Income in thousands at:
25-39
40-69
70-129
130-249
250-999
1000-99,999
1000000-.........

Where is the line that separates "the fucking rich" from the poor tax payers?

The economist who wrote this book.....

...was on the Dennis Prager radio show today.....he once again pointed out the advantages of a consumption tax over a flat tax...and of course it makes sense....you get all your money that you work for, and only get taxed on the things you buy.....he pointed out that this way the government doesn't know how much you make, and it is a great way to cut off how much money the government can take from us in taxes.....

the whole point for me is that we need to starve the beast....giving them more tax money doesn't fix the problem....
As long as they exempt medical, grocery, gas, and housing from the tax I'll vote for it.

All a consumption tax does is shift the tax burden from the wealthiest to those with much less...

When is enough, enough....with this kind of shift of the tax burden on to the middle class and away from the very elite?

When?

When?

STOP ALREADY, you silly, stupefied PAWNS...use your God given brain....

Oh, you silly rabbit! The elite consume more than the poor and would pay more on that consumption...the existing loopholes for the rich to avoid taxes would be CLOSED.
