Well times were different then. Women were treated as objects and second class citizens. Hell that started in Genesis. Woman was just supposed to be a helper for man. They didn't waste anytime justifying sexism in the Bible that's for sure.

But as far as the multiple wife thing I don't think there would be much nagging. I think what would happen is the "wife" would know her role and speak when spoken to. It's not like today when men and women are essentially equal partners in the relationship. Women acted and treated like they were inferior to the men. That's just how things were then.

In Middle Eastern cultures, obviously, arranged marriages are common. The word "married" and the word "betrothed" often cause confusion bc the customs are different in our culture.

In Western culture, as I'm sure you know, A man and a woman generally wait until after the age of consent to even think of marriage, bc they are largely in charge of choosing their spouses. Couples consummate marriage with sexual intercourse almost immediately after the marriage ceremony.

In Eastern culture, engagement (betrothal) is taken much more seriously, from a legal standpoint. And the couple, at least the female, has little or no say in the intended spouse. Once betrothed, they are considered to be married, although they are not supposed to consummate the marriage until the female has reached physical maturity, or when she starts her period.

Although, physical maturity is a whole different subject than emotional maturity. And even if a young girl has started her period, this doesn't mean that her body is ready to begin bearing children. Many teen births are considered risky bc the girl's hips have not widened sufficiently, and the baby runs the risk of being caught behind the pelvic bone. So, it seems much better to wait at least until the late teens for marriage/sex/childbearing.
