There seems to be an obvious solution to rising inequality: higher taxes. But there's an inconvenient fact here. The way most advanced, industrial countries have made real gains on inequality is through relativelyregressive taxes that fund programs that reduce inequality. In fact, America's tax system is already unusually progressive by international standards. Our ongoing research suggests that this unusual relationship is not a coincidence.

The countries in northern Europe that have made the biggest strides in reducing economic inequality do not fund their governments through soak-the-rich, steeply progressive taxes. Instead, they have broad-based taxes that ask all workers to contribute to a generous welfare state. Countries with highly progressive taxes that disproportionately hit the rich — like the United States — tend to have the stingiest welfare states.

Really?? A less progressive tax system is better for everyone?

No friggin shit. When the Socialist Scandinavians have figured that out and the alleged bastion of freedom and liberty, the U.S.A., is still trying to punish success you really have to wonder.

I think its a case where the USA has boxed itself in. We have crippled so many human beings now, including much of the middle class, with liberal welfare programs and idiotic liberal outsourcing programs that the only source of revenue remaining is the really rich who we rely on now more, as you pointed out, than even the socialist countries of Europe and Scandinavia.

The solution is to quickly undo the liberal influence with chemotherapy.

The highest tax bracket in Sweden has a marginal tax rate of 56%.

Overall, Sweden has the highest effective tax rate of any country in the world.

We get a greater share of govt revenue from the top 1% than does Sweden!! NYS and CA get 50% of their revenue from the top 1% while Federal govt gets 39% from top 1%.

THe more you know how to earn money in America the more the liberals punish you!!

Are we advocating Swedens tax rate and social programs here?

They've already got them in CA.

The point of the article, I think, is that everyone pays more taxes, including the middle class. I'm not sure if that's a winning message for the Republicans.

Sweden election favorites eye more taxes on rich

The plan is a clear signal of a U-turn after eight years of center-right Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, who has cut taxes and trimmed the welfare state as the Nordic region's largest economy outshone many of its European competitors.

But Sweden also has the fastest growing economic inequality of any OECD nation and voters have been shocked by media reports that staff at elderly care homes locked up patients in closets or neglected to feed them, raising fears people have slipped through a thinning welfare net.

The current top rate is about 57 percent, one of the world's highest.

FUKKKING CONSERVATIVES ALWAYS LIE

Non-Partisan Congressional Tax Report Debunks Core Conservative Economic Theory

The conclusion?

Lowering the tax rates on the wealthy and top earners in America do not appear to have any impact on the nation’s economic growth.

This paragraph from the report says it all—

“The reduction in the top tax rates appears to be uncorrelated with saving, investment and productivity growth. The top tax rates appear to have little or no relation to the size of the economic pie. However, the top tax rate reductions appear to be associated with the increasing concentration of income at the top of the income distribution.”

LOWEST EFFECTIVE SUSTAINED TAX RATE ON THE 'JOB CREATORS' FOR 80+ YEARS TODAY. WHY KEEP IT SO LOW?

A huge share of the nation's economic growth over the past 30 years has gone to the top one-hundredth of one percent, who now make an average of $27 million per household. The average income for the bottom 90 percent of us? $31,244.

According to this site, Sweden has the second highest marginal income tax rate in the world.

The Highest Income Tax Rates in the World

I also believe it is applied at a much lower level of income in Sweden too.

That was the point. More people in Sweden have skin in the game, as opposed to the U.S. where we think half the population shouldn't have to pay anything for the services they get.

Nearly every U.S. state taxes the poor more than the rich

Overall, the poorest 20 percent of households paid an average 10.9 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes in 2007, while the top 1 percent on average paid just 5.2 percent of their incomes in state and local taxes, according to the study.

Sweden's economic profile is remarkably different from the U.S.--for example, they do not practice unregulated capitalism in the way that we do. There is much less wage/wealth disparity.

I do wish people would do more research before posting about countries they have never been to and know nothing about.

Sweden not only has a 50% tax rate, but a VAT rate of something around 23%. (In Finland it is 24%).

Yes, Scandinavia has addressed social inequality (to some degree) and yes, there is a belief that everyone should pay something towards funding state services. But a BIG part of that is through progressive taxation.

One example of this is that even speeding fines are progressive - the more you earn, the more you pay per 10 k.p.h. over the speed limit.

Conservatives have 30+ years of going by their 'gut' about things versus factual data or reality.

I love that so out of fairness the wealthy should have to pay more at the supermarket too!!

Sorry low informed, ignorant conservative, the poster WAS pointing out despite the OP spin, Sweden IS and does have a PROGRESSIVE system that fights inequality, AND as I posted, since following the righties plan of cutting taxes on the rich, income inequality has risen faster in Sweden than any other European nation
