I thought this belonged here, as it really touched me as something any good servant of God would do, comfort someone in their last hours.

Psalm 116:15 Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

Hospital grants patient's dying wish for a glass of wine and a cigarette

A hospital in Denmark has released a photograph of a patient fulfilling his dying wish - enjoying a cigarette and a glass of white wine while viewing the sunset from a hospital balcony.

Carsten Flemming Hansen, 75, was admitted to Aarhus University Hospital last week suffering from a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

Learning that he was too ill to undergo surgery, and would die within days, if not hours, from internal bleeding, Mr Hansen told his nurse Rikke Kvist of his wish.

Although the hospital has a no smoking policy, an exception was granted for Mr Hansen, whose bed was wheeled out to the balcony for him to have a final drink and smoke while admiring a beautiful sunset.

"It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere," said Ms Kvist. "Of course they were relatives also affected by the fact that he was going to die, and they were sad.

"But it was cozy and there was humour."

The hospital shared the image on its Facebook page, where its been shared 4,500 at time of writing.

At least as it pertains to the US, if you wish to have any say in your own exit, stay away from the system; hospitals and nursing homes.

This kind of reminds me of the Clint Eastwood movie in which his friend that just had his lungs shot out is given one last cigarette as he dies.

I remember the day patients in US hospitals use to smoke at their bedside, can you imagine.

I have no problem with terminal people having alcohol in the hospital...but never cigarettes. The smoke can cause other patient to have breathing problems.

Shit I remember when the doctors did.
some still do , just not inside.
Yeah, but I recall this old leather faced doc's assistant/receptionist that used to give us shots as kids in the doc's office while she smoked. Cigarette in her mouth, dancing between her lips as she talked, and the growing dangling ash curl that would occasionally grow to such a length it would be shed only to grow anew.
