In the days since the Congress of Honduras hardened its absolute prohibition of abortion, the ranks of a feminist organisation that has been campaigning for decriminalisation in the staunchly conservative nation have been swelling.

The new recruits to the women’s rights group, Somos Muchas, are mostly young women between the ages of 18 and 30 who have been moved into action by recent events. For local activists, it is a sign that change is still possible in a country with some of the most severe restrictions on abortion in the world.

They did it out of fear,” said Neesa Medina, an activist with Somos Muchas, about lawmakers’ push to strengthen the prohibition. “Because they think they can ban the future. But you can’t ban the future.”

It has been forbidden to terminate a pregnancy in Honduras under any circumstance, even rape, incest, or if the life of the mother is in danger, since 1985.

I am not a fan of Aljazeera. I thought it was a bit interesting that you have a newish group of women +human rights groups.

The country has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world -- often a significant factor in unwanted pregnancies. Nearly one in three Honduran women over the age of 15 has experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner, data from the United Nations' 2020 Human Development Reports shows.

In 2018, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) carried out a health campaign aimed at providing medical and mental health care to survivors of sexual violence in Mexico and Honduras. In the Honduran capital city of Tegucigalpa, 90% of all pregnancy cases attended by the MSF mission were due to sexual assault.

Backward shithole. The places where this is happening are dwindling every year.Even Northern Ireland is allowing abortion.

All people who were conceived due to a woman being raped should be put to death, NOW!

Hour drive and they’re out of the country. Problem solved.

Be good if these women (and their sexual partners) were just as "undeterred" to maybe just not get pregnant in the first place rather than using abortions as a form of contraception.

Educate people from a young age about their bodies and all sexual matters. Ensure that all people, no matter how rural, have access to birth control. Catch rapists and punish them severely, even rape within marriage. The rate of abortions will drop, leaving only those who are carrying fetuses with abnormalities and those subjected to domestic violence and changed circumstances.

Get busy being "pro-life" in other areas besides abortion. Stamp out guns, violence, threats of violence against existing people, misogyny, and racism. Ensure that all people have homes, food, medical care, and education.

If rape is responsible for 90% of all pregnancies, Honduras is an exceptionally chaste country. It should make American wokesters happy to know that thousands of rapists are even now making their way here. I can just see woke women demanding respect from some unwashed Honduran with a machete in his hands.

It doesn't have to be one or the other. You can be pro-life in both.

You cannot teach murder via abortion is OK by citing racism and prejudices ffs. If I didn't think you were a crackpot yesterday, then I do now.

Having an abortion isn't "murder."

BTW: you are already a crackpot. You people who don't mind shooting people and yet scream about a woman having an abortion basically are woman-haters with a deeply evil motive that has absolutely nothing to do with preserving "life." Otherwise, why not promote birth control and avoid the conditions that lead people to seek an abortion in the first place? Why do you hate women's sexuality? Take a survey of how many of you folks have had sex when you didn't want to have a baby with your partner.

The OP cites a story claiming that 90% of all pregnancies in Honduras are the result of sexual violence.

This claim is so ridiculous is it obviously a lie. To be true, it would mean that the vast majority of Hondurans never engage in consensual sexual intercourse.

The fact that the OP cites an article that contains such an obvious lie proves he is either incredibly stupid, or that he knows it's a lie and that makes him a liar too.

No. That isn't in the OP. Start over.

OK, I misread it.

What the article says is that a non-profit that treats women who have been raped finds that 90% of these women are pregnant through rape.

Not a lie, technically, but very misleading.

The eagerness of liberals to have brown people abort their children should be noted.

Still not getting it. You are reading Penelope's post which is not the OP. Start over.

The point of the story is that Hondurans aren't aborting their children, which is pissing off liberals because too many brown people are being born.
