Hollywood Wants Us to Bail Out Movie Theaters

Have not gone to a theater since Star Wars came out. Don’t plan to go ever again.
I think the last time I went to the movies was to see Ready Player One.
That was in March of 2018.
I haven't had the urge to see a movie about a 110lb. woman beating up a half dozen 250lb. men lately... so there is that

George of the Jungle...1997.

I was done.

Movie theaters exist to sell popcorn

The major studios get almost all the profit from showing a film

Can't wait for the next Bond film. Gonna go see a re-showing of Halloween in a few weeks.

Cinema, theaters, and museums are probably one of the few businesses most thinking people can agree on that need bail-outs during this time of the pandemic.

They themselves can bail out theaters. What... the combined net worth of actors is probably several-several $billion. I believe they can take care of it themselves.
Yes, but they want US Tax money to go to the theaters so they can pay $$$$$ HOllyweird more money so the actors get more. Why spend theirs, when they can spend yours?

What will happen if movie theaters close?

Will they bulldoze the space or leave it vacant until movies come back.

Same goes for restaurants. Who else is going to take the space? Won’t another restaurant eventually take it over?

Probably leave them closed. Not sure I get the point of your question.

I think that we need a new index to identify industries by the number of people that it takes to keep the business viable. A car lot, for example doesn't usually have 120 customers at one time. Ditto for a dentist office and barber shop. Movies, theaters, airlines...they do. So when (not if) another round of stimulus/relief is passed, the industries that rate high on this index would get more assistance than those who rate lower.

Of course this should have been done in like in 1968 when we lost 100,000 people because of the flu. It was hubris to think it wouldn't happen again.

There is money to be made in showing movies. It is still a night out and a different audio and visual experience.

Unless the public gets used to watching at home, movie theaters will come back.

They claimed TV would kill the movies, they claimed VCRs would kill movies, they claimed big flat screen TVs would kill the movies .......they survived

Movie theaters are a treasured part of our culture and it is ridiculous that they are being driven into bankruptcy by short-sighted, neurotic decisions by our "leaders."

But the same thing applies to scores of other entertainment institutions (opera houses, horse tracks, nightclubs, etc.), not to mention eating establishments, half of which will go bankrupt if this insanity continues for much longer.

The solution is not to bail them out, but rather, to open them back up, with appropriate precautions.

If we put as much effort into devising operating protocols that would keep us safe as we do into bad-mouthing people who don't wear masks outdoors, we could solve this conundrum (the shutdowns) within a week.

The sheer number of empty store fronts here right now is, simply put, fucking frightening.

I remember when shopping malls came in and put Main Street businesses out of business

Those storefronts sat vacant or underutilized for decades. Now, Main Street businesses and restaurants are being revitalized and the malls look like ghost towns.

Things change. Empty business can come back with new occupants

Sure, but of course right now it is a little different.
1980s - 90s was the era of the shopping malls. And you bet that made downtowns collapse.
In the 2000s, downtowns were revitalized and strip centers were being built everywhere..and that made malls collapse.
Today... they have both collapsed. Our strip centers that were pretty much all full a couple years ago, are now at least 50% empty. Downtown was great. And has been great for a good 10 years. Now it isn't. Now for the first time since the 90s - they are emptying out. Covid is killing the little guys.

Businesses will go bust. And it is not their fault.

But new businesses will come in and replace them. Same goes for movie theaters. If the public wants to attend, new owners will come in

Well that is a little blasse' isn't it?
here is the difference RW... the little guys are getting absolutely crushed right now. As stated by many economist... we could se a 50% loss in number of small businesses still open by year end.
And what is going to replace them, indeed already is, is corporate box stores and Amazon.

I agree, small business will be screwed. They are paying the price for protecting us against COVID.

My point is that a business shuttered by COVID can reopen once it has cleared. May be a different owner, different business, but they will reopen. If Amazon was going to get you, they will regardless of COVID
