History Is Clear: Socialism Isn't the Cure. So Why Do Millennials Like It?

We can’t have a modern, educated workforce to man a modern economy if we make the degrees excessively expensive and starting salaries too small to pay for that education

Bernie and Liz Warren understand that. Something has to change

what would they change? make college cheaper? how? make starting jobs pay more? how? raising taxes on everyone will not do either of those things.

Something has gotta give

We can increase investment in public colleges to bring down prices, subsidize and provide low/ free education, require businesses that hire college graduates to subsidize the cost of education, mandate employees to either pay higher initial wages or help defer loan payments

So you think that somebody will hire an engineer with no experience, and pay their 150K in college loans instead of hiring an engineer that doesn't come with that kind of liability? You'd be closing off the market for college graduates doing it that way. After all, you can only charge one employer to pay off those loans--the first employer that hires him or her.
That’s the way it should be
If you need an engineer, YOU should pay to educate him not the taxpayer

how about if each person pays for his/her education? the way it used to be
I paid for my college education earning minimum wage over the summer
Upon graduation, I got a job that I could rent an apartment, pay my bills and buy a new car after working for six months

Students today can’t do that.
Our economic system is failing them

why not get government totally out of education and let the free market of supply and demand set the price of education? If young people can't afford college then the colleges would either have to close their doors or reduce tuition. the government cannot fix everything, I doubt that you will ever understand that, but its a simple fact.

the solutions you suggest would only make things worse and kick the can down to the next generations. someone has to pay, eventually. So why not let the proven economic laws of supply and demand operate without govt interference.

also, the idea that everyone needs and is entitled to a college education is bullshit, the world will always need plumbers, electricians, carpenters and auto mechanics and those jobs pay good salaries.
Typical conservative asshole

Make higher education accessible only to the rich. Provide an uneducated, unskilled. Low paid workforce

Nobody said everyone is even capable of a college degree. We need to make trade schools more accessible and affordable.
Trade schools are even a bigger scam than colleges

Trade schools are much less expensive than college, and you get into the work force much quicker as well. The problem is kids these days figure if they're going to invest in an advanced education, they are not going to go through the time and costs only to end up working with their hands.
Trade school is not cheap. What does it cost to take training for a CDL?

Some trade schools do a good job. Others are scams that urge students to take out large student loans and offer a marginal product to unqualified candidates

And you think if we switched payment methods to government, that wouldn't happen even more????

I remember in the early 80's when my company wanted me to attend electronics school. Electronics school is all math. In fact I had to do a lot of studying to pass the entrance exam.

First day in class, the teacher drew a picture of a battery, and two resisters coming from the battery to the load. He explained that the battery is 12 volts, therefore, the resistors absorbed 6 volts each. He asked if there was any questions, and some people in the room quietly laughed including myself.

There was this one fat younger black guy with his hand raised. He asked several stupid questions. He just didn't get that 6+6=12. After about five minutes, the teacher proceeded with the class. I quietly said to the guy next to me "I don't think he's going to make it!" The other guy whispered back "I know he won't, because this is his third time taking the first semester."

When on break, I got to talk to my new classmate about the other student. Apparently due to health reasons, he too had to drop out of class, and that's how he knew of the black guy. He was on some sort of government program that kept paying for the school even though the guy had no shot at it. Obviously the school rigged his test so it looked like he had the ability to stand a chance.

As for getting a CDL, you can do it one of several ways. First you can go to a school, and it's about 2 grand range depending on where you go. Or you can get free training and licensing from several companies that offer the program, but you are under contract to work for them for one year after they get you licensed.

The problem is our capitalism is broken. We have some sort of corporatism or cronyism. Our economy is filled with near monopolies and corps have all the advantages over workers. If we had good capitalism nobody would care for socialism.

Yep.

The increasing interest in socialism is because of the way capitalism has become warped.

The Meltdown taught us absolutely nothing.

Socialism is being advocated as a solution to capitalism out of control

We used to rely on business to take care of its workers. You could get a job out of High School, work hard and be employed for life. When you finished, you had a pension waiting for you.

Capitalism is no longer like that. Employees are a commodity to be discarded once a project is completed. Keep them in fear of losing their job and they will accept any treatment.

Someone has to stick up for the employees

Nothing is more anti capitalism than non compete agreements. But they are all over now even for low paying jobs. The right has embraced corporate welfare, trump fully behind big deals like Foxconn. Gov should not be influencing corp decisions and picking winners and losers. Our capitalism is broken.

No, the increase in younger people with Socialism is many younger people don't want to accept responsibility. They don't like making decisions and don't like dealing with problems. That's the draw.

I believe people are more conscious of money when it's their money. If it's governments money, who cares? It's not your problem.

In the instance I gave you, if that guy was taking loans out for that school that had to be repaid, he wouldn't have kept coming back and wasting more money. He would have come to the realization that he wasn't cut out for things that require a lot of math. However he wasn't paying the bill--taxpayers were, so he had nothing to lose but time.

There is no reliable career paths for High School graduates. Even those coming out of the military have to move back with their parents
College used to guarantee success. Now it requires massive debt and first jobs with few benefits and low pay

College never guaranteed anything. You stand a better chance at making more money and less chance being unemployed than you do by not going to college, but that depends on the individual and the field of work they chose.

People who don't want to go to college can get into a trade of some sort. But if you are going to enter the work world with no skills of any kind, chances are you're not going to be doing very well. But if you stay at home, work for a couple of years, save enough money for a trade school of some kind, you can live a middle-class lifestyle.

There was a time a High School Diploma did

Even those with a trade today are struggling. The pay is not where it used to be

That's something that's beyond all our control. What is in control is your future. Correct, you can't go from high school to the workforce expecting to live good unless you plan on staying with your parents. But the world is not going to change around you, you have to change with the world.

So now to live a middle-class lifestyle, you need to choose a career of some sort, even if it doesn't pay what it used to. What you can't expect is to not put any effort into it, and expect the government to make things better for you. A country over 22 trillion in debt simply doesn't have the resources for that.

And again, the “doesn’t pay what it used to” has no practical explanation. We are not in a recession, unemployment is low, dollar is strong there is no reason that salaries have not sprung back

The only reason is that employers do not have to. They have beaten down the workforce with threats and layoffs and union protections have eroded

If you don’t believe the government should stand up for the working class, can’t they at least stop standing behind the wealthy elite?

They are not standing with or against anybody. It's not governments job to run businesses unless you live in a Socialist state. When people are concerned enough about good paying jobs, that they will only purchase products from companies that provide those jobs, then jobs will start paying more. But as long as we carry on with the most important consideration of a product being how cheap it is, expect more low paying jobs in the future.

You simply can't demand industries pay more if you're not going to buy their products.
