MARLIN, Texas (KWTX/Gray News) - A high school in Texas has rescheduled its graduation ceremony after most of the senior class was found ineligible to graduate.

According to the Marlin Independent School District, the ceremony has been pushed to June to give nearly 30 seniors more time to meet graduation requirements.

According to an audit from the district, 28 of 33 seniors at Marlin High School did not meet the graduation requirements due to their attendance or grades.

“We hold firm to our belief that every student in Marlin ISD can and will achieve their potential,” said Superintendent Darryl Henson. “Students will be held to the same high standard as any other student in Texas.”

Alondra Alvarado is among the five that met the graduation requirements.

“They told us that because of the students that didn’t meet the requirements it wouldn’t be fair for only five students to walk the stage,” Alvarado said.

That's a weird sense of "fairness" especially for the 5-kids that actually did the work.

Our country is doomed. We can begin to correct course at the school level:

1) We need to have a dress code for the public schools, and reinstate the switch. And 30 minutes of homework in elementary school, an hour in middle school, and two hours in high school.

2) There needs to be a foundational block of subjects in which students must get a C minimum before enrolling in electives. This core (differs according to grade level) should be: reading, writing skills, arithmetic and higher math, basic U.S. and World history, geography, phys Ed* and science such as biology.

3) Social studies would not be introduced at all, since it is so prone to the justice warrior teachers, until middle school.

4) Nice to have classes such as Art will only be allowed to students who have a 2.5 average in their core classes.

* Phys Ed will be divided into boys and girls classes, and they stick to teams within their own gender.

pop. 5,000 Something, less than 30% white. 1,058 approximately school age, between ages 5 and 18. About Half black , 27 percent hispanic. 40% poverty rate. It's surpising the 5 who did graduate weren't shot for 'Actin White' before they made it to high school at all.
Yeah I looked at a map and talk about set-up to fail....Stuck between Austin and Fort Worth and east of Waco.

.

I'm looking at the graduation photos for the high school in my small Midwest town (pop. approx 1100) and counting roughly 25-30 graduating seniors.

What is wrong with that place, with only 5 eligible seniors in a town of 5000?

This is exactly why I happily paid my high property tax, most of which is earmarked for schools.
