And it was precisely because we went off the gold standard that the economy began recovering.

Those economies which went off the gold standard recovered more quickly than those that didn't.

Yes, true enough, and I agree it was necessary to go off of it then, and squeeze the rest of the water out of the false Wall street bubble frauds that brought on the Depression, but it should have been a temporary measure, and re-implemented after the crisis passed; in the case of the Depression era of course that would have been until after 1948. Same for the Nixon era. While it's far from perfect and some annoying disadvantages, it at least imposes some sort of discipline and grounding for currencies and standards in leiu of something better, which hasn't come along yet, despite the best efforts of economists to claim otherwise. And gold is still an international currency, unofficially or not, which is why so many central banks and international trading companies hedge in it and stockpile it.

Consumer spending and construction, along with rail shipments, the latter was the standard economic indicator most used at the time, began falling in 1927, along with unemployment starting to rise. This was the beginning of the Depression for in the real economy. The major reason for that drop was the huge drop in real capital spending, as money flooded Wall Street instead of being re-invested in production and expanding job-producing enterprises; why invest in products and real production when you can merely manipulate stock bubbles or just put your money in the call money markets and make 40% for doing nothing?

The Rockefeller interests alone put some $300 million into the call money markets instead of turning it over into real capital investments. Multiply that several times over for all the other wealth concentrations and major banks and you now have the financial sector undergoing massive inflation under a literal tidal wave of cash while the real economy basically shuts down.

Sound familiar? It should, since that's the kind of Bubble Economy that has taken over the U.S. since the Reagan Fiasco and his 'deregulation' scams.

Roosevelt nor anybody else forced anybody to do any of that, they did it entirely on their own accounts, and then after crashing the economy they ran off and hid on their private estates behind their private armies and cried and sniveled for the government to order out the Army to shoot all the malcontents down, as if it were outrageous for the icky unwashed proles to not lie down and starve to death and watch their families die from the effects on malnutrition and diseases.

Roosevelt provided leadership and alternatives, exactly what was needed for the times, and he delivered, keeping many on their farms and millions more with at least some income to keep going until things turned around, something the so-called 'right wing' wouldn't do or knew how to do, which is why Roosevelt got re-elected four times.

This cycle hasn't been a mystery, yet it happens over and over and over again, and now the government steps in to bail the fraudsters out and lets them keep their personal fortunes to boot.
