Hey Democrats

Why don't you keep telling us how great your public school system is?

Um, billy? Have you been in your backyard bomb shelter for the past 60 years? How many Republican admins vs. how many Democratic admins have we had over the past 60 years? Or is it just that our Republican pillars of community stood by and bit their knuckles while clutching their chest over a horrible system Democrats create but said nothing, nada, zip, zero, zilch?

Possibly off topic, but could be part of the problem.

Hey, will. Actually, billy and I usually agree on the sorry state of American edu. And incidentally, this A.M. I also read the article he linked and actually thought of him at the time. But blaming it on Democrats is more than I can stand still for....I'm pretty sure he knows that. Love the cartoon satire, or is irony a better word. As an old guy, I am well aware that every new helpful device requires a trade-off. This is a sad goodbye to personal face sharing.

How many Republicans do you know who favor dumping the arts and filling the time with diversity and multicultural training? In doing away with vocational training so the thickheaded ones who can't deal with academics would at least learn a skill with which they could support themselves? How many do you know who would be interested in shit-canning all competition among students right down to games at recess? Or in lowering the bar so that the learners are brought low, the dummies feel smart when they are anything but, and the schools can report glowing figures of success and ask for more money?

Even Vonnegut couldn't envision this.

Information on the success/failure of the school system is provided by those within the system who assess it. Consider the results against the dominant political thinking found there.

The fox guarding those henhouse dollars, if you will.

Hmmmmm I had 4 kids all of whom got a top notch education at our public school. Of course we are a rural low unemployment district. We just overwhelmingly voted for a referendum to keep our schools funded. My taxes will increase $60 this year. Small price to pay for helping our youth.

There is much more magical thinking propagated here than in other industrialized countries.

We have the same complaint, billy. I even mourn the loss of the shop teacher with the paddle that dispensed discipline as instructed by the principal. But why do you suppose all this social behavior crap has been added to the school agenda? I contend it is because it is no longer taught responsibly in the home. So we have dumped all kinds of social skills once taught at home before we ever hit the schoolhouse door onto our schools, from the 10 Commandments to respect for the property of others. And so schools are tasked with civilizing tots but forbidden to effectively discipline. Darn right they're a mess, but lets not overlook why. Added to the decline over the years is the fear placed on schools now to protect, actually physically protect, students from mass killers, either real from outside, or internal 'in the bud' potentials to the point of silliness, and it is little wonder our edu is in the crapper. But we split on whose job it is to correct the problem. You opted for private school, but that option isn't open to the bulk of the populace. If you look at nations who have passed us by you will find higher expectations of student progress, and less coddling by parents too darn tired trying to stay alive to do the job our parents did in making us toe the line. All IMHO of course. What say you?

We need to return to a societal construct where there are actual consequences for bad behavior. If the children are not civilized, send them somewhere where they will be made civilized. They have no right to disrupt everyone else.

Since private schools are widely successful, make public schools like private schools.

All teachers must have an education. At the elementary level a degree in SOMETHING/ANYTHING is fine. Teaching at the secondary and high school level requires a degree in the chosen discipline. Pay them well as professionals on a merit system. No tenure.

Pound it into the little dears' heads from preschool on that they are responsible for their own future, and that they will either make something of themselves, or they will go to hell, because no one owes them anything, and no one is going to give them anything.

And yes, hold parents largely responsible for the behavior of their children. If you are too tired to be a parent, don't make yourself one in the first place.

Well said, billy!
