Wearing a bulletproof vest is just as important as carrying a gun. It will stop both friendly and unfriendly fire.

Always keep your empty hands visible when the police are dealing with a threatening situation. If you want to move a weapon away from a bad guy on the ground, kick it away with your foot.

Not really related to this incident, but even if police tell you to do something like disarm yourself if you have a holstered gun, don't reach for it, disregard their instructions, and keep your empty hands in the air. Don't be confrontational; just pretend to not understand what they mean and keep explaining that you aren't holding a gun. If they want to remove your gun from your holster, let them do it themselves. Innocent people have been shot and killed for complying with police instructions to unholster their weapon and toss it away.

Don't hold anything else in your hands either. No wallet/ID. No cell phone. No anything. Just empty hands high in the air until the police feel that they have secured the scene. Them securing the scene may include them handcuffing you until they can establish who are the good guys and bad guys, so be prepared to cooperate with that as well.
