The Democrats believe that Trump, who is the president of the executive branch, is not allowed to discuss anything with the US Attorney General without their permission.
Senate Democrats are now seeking documents over an alleged request by Trump for US Attorney General Bill Barr to hold a press conference to clear him of any wrongdoing with Ukraine.
The Washington Post earlier this week reported that President Trump asked Bill Barr to hold a presser clearing him of wrongdoing and affirm that no laws were broken during his July 25 phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Bill Barr was asked to respond to their request for records within five business days.
Both Trump and Barr deny the Washington Post story about the presser.
The Hill reported:
Sens. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said Trump’s request raises “serious concerns about the president’s perception of the Justice Department as a partisan political instrument and his willingness to use the power of federal law enforcement in pursuit of his own objectives.”
“We submit this FOIA request in order to obtain communications, documents, and other information related to the president’s reported request that you hold a news conference to clear him of wrongdoing during his call with the Ukrainian president,” they added.
President Trump went on a tweetstorm earlier this week calling the “degenerate” Washington Post ‘fake news’ for reporting that he asked Bill Barr to hold a news conference.
