This is great news for thieves. You can now break into a car and steal stuff knowing that if caught you just claim there was a dog roasting inside. Where is the dog? He ran off.

Gov. Brown signs bill allowing people to break into cars to rescue animals from heat

Gov. Jerry Brown on Saturday signed into law a measure allowing Californians to break into vehicles to rescue animals if they appear to be in danger from excessive heat

The bill by Assemblyman Marc Steinorth (R-Rancho Cucamonga), Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles) and others was introduced after a series of incidents in which dogs died after being left in closed cars on hot days.

"We're very excited about the lives this new law will save," Steinorth said in a statement Saturday on Facebook. "Thank you to everyone who helped us raise awareness of this serious issue and showed their support."

Under AB 797, a citizen must first call law enforcement to report a situation in which he or she believes an animal to be in peril.

But if the animal is in imminent danger, the car is locked, and law enforcement is not arriving quickly enough to save the animal’s life, the bill provides immunity from civil and criminal liability to a person causing vehicle damage for the purpose of rescuing the animal.

while I like that dogs wont have to cook, I can see people throwing a mouse into your car after they smashed your window

I can see a conflict of laws:

* 'I saw him break into my car and try to steal my dog ...... so I shot him'.

** "But he was trying to save your dog."

* 'How was I suppose to know that?'

** "Did you leave a window open for the dog to breath?*

* 'No. I don't need to. I have an air vent in the trunk for that purpose.'

16 states already have that law. It works quite well. I'm glad to see it in California.

No time ...how long does that take ........I thought we were supposed to hate the police and never ever call those murderous thugs

stupid emotion based law , I expect to see more of these EMOTION based laws as time goes on . ------------ if the dog [personal property] cooks then the guy that allowed the dog to cook can probably be prosecuted under some other silly law . -------------------- I liked the years in the past when if you allowed YOUR dog to cook in your car you could either eat him or bury the dog in the back yard . [busybody laws] but the bonehead that saves the dog will be a hero as i roll my eyes] firemen and cops will respond and why not , the money is pretty good !!

I don't look in other people's cars, I mean if an animal is scratching at a window trying to get out, I MIGHT see it, but I would call the cops. I would never think of breaking into someone's car unless I happened to see a baby in a car seat with all the windows rolled up. No one should leave an infant or child unattended in a car to begin with.

fire department responds to cat stuck in tree 911 call . It happens as the times get sillier and sillier !!

-------------------------------------------------- baby in the car is so much different and I agree with your reasoning Penny !!

Baby in the car isn't that much different. To many people, babies are almost as valuable as animals.

Amen to that. It's not just the heat. Leave a kid in the car and some pervert liberal will steal the kid.
