GOP Convention

Democrats had major speeches from individuals representing all wings of our party. Republicans are trying to hide the fact that the most powerful part of the GOP is the religious right. That's why Pat Robertson (who has been at every Republican convention since the 1970s) was excluded.

Clearly, the most powerful part of the GOP is NOT the religious right. If that were true, the current administration would not have been elected and would not have been able to succeed in it's mission the way it has.

Please, think before you type would you?

Do you remeber the Democratic convention in which Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania Ben Casey was not allowed to speak because he was Pro-life?

Take a look at some of the major initiatives this administration has undertaken: Faith based initiatives, gay marriage constutitonal amendment, the constant invoking of God in speeches, bringing back the global gag rule, etc. all of these were done to keep the highly powerful religious right happy.

In an effort to follow the rules and not flame I will say this nicely.

They were done in an effort to keep the majority of citizens in this country safe, comfortable and happy and for no other reason.

Im wondering why the idea of God in speeches has you worried?
Really you don't have to worry the religious right is going interfere with whatever sexual positions you engage in the privacy of your bedroom. We are really not interested, we're too busy doing our own thing.

The idea that you can seperate a person's religious views or moral foundation and still have them do the right thing amazes me!!!!!!!!!!

This kind of blows your whole theory that the GOP maintains a stranglehold on the religious aspect of politics.

Would you say that this is one of the most religious White Houses in the history of [modern] American presidents?

It's hard to say is it the most religious. Jimmy Carter, as a person, [is] as religious a president as we've had. But Jimmy Carter comes out of an old Baptist tradition that very much respected, highlighted, revered the separation of church and state. So Carter was very religious in a less public way.

I think it's worth remembering that when Carter first described himself as an evangelical, born-again Christian, he was treated in a lot of the press as if he were some sort of Martian. It's hard for us to remember how new this very public presence of evangelicals is. There are 20 million of them in the country, and Carter was strange because he was one of 20 million people. But Carter was very reserved about this. …

Bill Clinton was religious. Bill Clinton could quote Scripture with the best of them. Bill Clinton could preach with the best of them. He gave some very powerful speeches at Notre Dame, where he sounded Catholic; at African-American churches, where he sounded AME or Baptist. Now, these all overlap. It wasn't contradictory. And he quoted Scripture at least as much, if not more than George W. Bush does

Yes, but why are religious conservatives like Pat Robertson not invited? The only big name speaker that could even be close to construed as representative of the dominant far-right wing of the GOP is Rick Santorum. The rest of the names mentioned are fairly moderate (Sam Brownback is the second most conservative on that list). Nice try, but I ain't buying it. Look at the Democratic convention. You had speakers ranging from Al Sharpton to Ronald P. Reagan.

Wow, speakers ranging all the way from Al Sharpton to Ronald Phew Reagan! Now that's what I call a WIDE range!
Right. Nice try. :lame2:

If the religious right was as powerful as you claim, abortions and condoms wouldn't be a dime a dozen, and gay marriage wouldn't even be an issue. It's the dems who are giving undue power to a vocal minority. Gays make up abotuu 2% of the population, while Christians alone (not to mention Jews, Muslims, and other religions opposed to gay marriage) make up over half the population. The religious right doesn't take power through the judicial system, like the liberal interest groups do, they wield power because they ARE IN THE MAJORITY.

Oh, and Al Sharpton to Ronald P. Reagan is less diverse than than the contents of a can of Pringles. If they'd had everybody from Al Sharpton to Mike Reagan, then I'd call it diverse. As it is, they're all cast in the same mold.

ACLUDEM, have you ever stopped to consider the irony that the Right, which is admittedly made up of wealthier overweight middle aged white guys named Chuck, has diversity of opinion, arguments and fights over what should be done with our government and culture, While the LEFT who hunts out a sample of every ethicity, race and alternate sexual identity and culture other than Anglo/Wasp , has absolute rigidity in posistion, thought, terminolgy, ...they invented the thought and word police.

Remember when the DC figure a couple years back was forced to apologise and resign because he used the word "niggardly" in a public statement? Even after the word was explained to the outraged that is has skandinavian origins and NO racial overtones , he was still forced out of office because the ignorant didn't like the word.
