Im from Germany.
in germany University education(we don t have colleges) is not free. It is payed by taxpayer money.
access is regulated. you need certain levels off highschool achievement to access diffrent studies, for example to study medicin you need to have an average of A and pass a test. then the taxpayers will finance your medical education. as doctors earn money they pay taxes, repaying the cost of their education propably 2x-10x, it is good to enable people qualified to study to have higher education, it enriches the country, University graduates repay their tax financed education by paying taxes.
Univerdsity graduates usually earn more money and therefore pay more Taxes, its a win win situation.

and theres of course private universies with high tution fees.

finaly german Universitys don t pay your food and don t offer a dormatory, you have to pay for these, although theres programs BAFÖG to finance it on a half subsidary half credit base.

What does generation X and y mean? English? Certainly if you were born around the start of the 21st century, you can only whistle for the freedoms of the 20th century people. By the way, they should dream of the freedom of the 19th century people, who didn't even need a passport to travel and work anywhere, let alone university certificates and credit extensions.

i would like to add that in the German model of financing higher education, its the society as a whole that profits, because of increased Tax income, and educated People. The risk of geting an education is shared by everyone, the profits socialized, instead of making banks rich through credits with terrible Rates.
And potentially destroying a whole life by one wrong decision in getting an education.getting an education should not be a life threatening risk.

The most startling thing that we all learned from this round of presidential primaries was concerning Generation X and Y and their love and embrace of Bernie.

Anyone over about 35 knows that the Federal government cannot possibly afford any more entitlement programs. It is already hard pressed balancing its obligations from past Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes which it has already spent and which has gone unfunded in the retirement plan sense of the word.

So along come the new boomers of Gen X and Y and now THEY want Bernie to give them FREE college.

What ever happened to academic achievement and scholarships and military service for college money?!

Why are these Gen X and Y so lazy?!

if you are qualified for higher education, in germany you can get it. no matter how rich your parents are. and you will earn more money reap the profit personnaly. its just that you will be paying for the next generation like the generation before payed for your education
