Gates cutting Pentagon budget by $78bn over five years; HASC Chairman not happy

Entirely to small.

And still waiting for the 100 billion the Republicans promised to cut.

3 times I have posted cuts that have already been made and programs cut into the future that total over 200 bn...

so lets see, entitlement cuts of 70 bn?

I await your list.

Like every socialist who masquerades as a liberal, Sallow has no cuts to social spending.

BBC News - Gates cutting Pentagon budget by $78bn over five years

US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has announced a $78bn (£50.3bn) military budget cut, including a move to scrap a $13bn plan for amphibious vehicles.

The cuts are part of a five-year spending plan for the Defence Department and go beyond the $100bn in internal savings already announced.

Mr Gates has been sceptical about whether large military vehicles, like tanks and EFVs, will continue to be crucial military instruments as engagement in modern warfare changes. The cuts come in addition to $100bn in cuts by 2016, which Mr Gates has said should be reinvested in modernising weapon systems.

He said he wanted to end the post-9/11 Pentagon's "culture of endless money where cost was rarely a consideration"

Meanwhile, at the House Armed Services Committee:

"I'm not happy," House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard McKeon told reporters. He said the cuts were greater than defence companies had been expecting.

:eusa_eh:

the article I saw spoke more to manpower limitations.

*shrugs*for anyone really interested they can look up the Quadrennial Defense Review the Pentagon issued in jan I think, of 2010. Its not pretty.

This is a good start - we need to look at selling and closing bases in Europe next. Time for Europe to defend themselves or start PAYING us to do so for them.

We need to close like 600 of the over 700 bases.

400 at a minimum.

We could cut military spending in half and never feel any pain.

thats ludicrous.

anyway, we just spent of over a trillion on the 'safety net", any quid pro quo here?

Why exactly would I want to cut entitlements?

But they should be made more efficient. There is far to much waste and corruption. I sat on a jury for a medicare scam. This was the first operation for the NYC unit and they did a sting on a pharmacy giving out false scripts. More of that needs to be done.

And there could be some effort to clean up SSI. As in..people "worth" over a certain amount probably shouldn't be getting it. Add in it's probably prudent to raise the retirement age and contribution to keep it solvent.

And..we should modernize our prison system. That's a monkey on our back right there. Non-violent prisoners should not be housed in a jail. Heck..employers are crying about unskilled labor shortages..and these guys fit the bill. There should be some sort of half way houses that marry the two. That and we need to educate people that are at risk.

But all in all..we need to get a handle on the military.

You are either kidding or I don't understand your point.

Why exactly would I want to cut entitlements?

Because they account for the vast majority of the debt.

gates has been cutting delaying and canceling for years. I have spelled it out.

My reference is to the additional 70 and change in the op, my request is for a list of entitlements from sallow etc. that are going to be trimmed and made effecient etc....to the same tune.

a puny $78 billion out of $3.5 trillion. Gates has merely chosen to make the buttons on military dress uniforms out of plastic instead of nickel.

Good dem strategy. Dems cut military spending and republicans will have to show they can cut it more than the dems .

Seems like a paltry sum to me but it's a start.

We should consider closing down the vast majority of our overseas bases and just leave a few key ones in place.

Do that and end a war or two.

That's alright it's going to work.

You seem to not have read correctly. The Republicans are unhappy that much is being cut. Or least their representative of the HASC committee, that being the chairman.

It's a great start. As a Republican i'm disappointed to see the party isn't serious about cutting spending.

Why would they be serious? They were not serious about it during 6 years of total control and a good economy. A great economy to hear them tell it.

You mean back when we still had trillions upon trillions in debt, a balanced (or at least close to it) budget, and the GOP decided to cut taxes and go to war?

As long as this doesn't become a detriment into our cold war with China I'm down, but unfortunately, everything we do is about China so I don't see how these reductions cannot affect our foreign policy goals with that ridiculously insolent pariah state. At the same time, I don't think we can sustain this.
