Cut the Defense Budget? Over My Cold, Dead Gavel | Danger Room | Wired.com

In his first post-election speech, Rep. Buck McKeon, the California Republican who’s about to become the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, warned that cutting defense spending was a “red line for me and should be a red line for all Americans.” Speaking to the conservative Foreign Policy Institute in Washington, McKeon argued that the Pentagon’s projected one percent real growth in the defense budget over the next five years “is a net cut for investment and procurement accounts.”

“A defense budget in decline portends an America in decline,” McKeon said, arguing that cuts will have geopolitical consequences, “undermin[ing] our ability to project power, strengthen our adversaries and weaken our alliances.”

During a post-speech press conference, McKeon didn’t sound like he was out to cut any specific programs. He reminded reporters that he supports the funding of a second engine for the F-35, something both Obama and Gates consider unnecessary. With all the talk of cuts, he said, “pretty soon, my concern is that we end up back with a bow and arrow.”

Well this should not come as any surprise. I don't think any of us actually expected the GOP to go ahead and cut the military budget that is filled with more waste than a landfill.

It shouldnt have been a surprise. The GOP said they would make cuts, they didnt say they would make the necessary cuts to save the nation.

You still have two choices, some cuts or increased spending.

I keep saying this and I've been saying it for a few years now, if they're serious they'll take the time to go through the budget line by line and look at EVERYTHING. No departments, programs or pets off the table. Some of the crap we're funding is programs, tax breaks or subsidies that stopped making sense 20 years ago, assuming they ever did in the first place. What program once started ever dies on its own?

No sacred cows, each spending item on its own merits.

As a conservative, any Republican who doesn't favor cutting defense spending is a complete dope. But I don't mean cutting it to the bone, just eliminating the fat that is there as in any large budget. Planes, ships, other resources the military has stated they don't need but politicians insist they "buy" because it keeps folks back home in districts/states employed, contributions coming in to reelection war chests, etc.

I say put all of DOD through Boot Camp. Those that make it, can stay. How do those salary and benefit packages compare to active service members??? Thought so. How many Obama Bumper Stickers are in their parking lot? I wonder. Cut Military spending? Why not here?????

Streamline the procurement process and make it more competitive, there would be a good start. I know some work was done but it obviously needs a lot more. Only so many companies can build a plane, but what about everything else from soup to nuts?

2 carriers, a carrier grp. 200 f-22's, at least 50 F-35's ( or more 35's in exchange for even less 22'as which cost more) I guess don't count as cuts?

Some of these big corporations..and congress people must be sweating hard. Defense cuts are going to have a huge effect on the bottom line.

While I doubt this socialist gravy train is coming to an end..at least it's being spotlighted.

You could easily cut defense spending without losing any capabilities. Heck, you could do it and increase capabilities by making it much more efficient.

These people need to wake up.

We need to listen more to what the Military says it needs, and stop shoving unnecessary, outdated crap down their throats, because it's someone's pet project.

We are long over due to close many (not all) foreign bases. Or at least say we are. That will bring many countries to the negotion table so to keep the bases open, and thier economies that rely on us being there in good shape.

Amen!!!

I've worked with the DoD on contracts for our military services and it's nothing short of bureaucratic hell. And it doesn't end once you've finally - and finally can be an eternity - got a signed contract because their left hand never knows what their right hand is doing. As a result, problems pop up that they invariably claim are the contractor's fault, which then puts you even further into bureaucratic hell trying to straighten them out.

Neither party wants to do that, they BOTH have pet projects and departments that they don't want touched, but little partisan hacks like ModBert want to pretend that it only exists on one side.

Well the Democrats had a Democrat in the White House along with a Super Majority in Congress. So why didn't they cut the Defense Budget? Why didn't they get rid of the Patriot Act for that matter? They could have done anything they wanted yet they blamed the Republicans for everything. Now you're blaming Republicans for something you could have done but refused to. Why are you demanding the Defense Budget be cut now? You didn't do it when you had all the power yet the you feel the Republicans have to? Seems pretty disingenuous to me. Here's the News...The Republicans now control the House. You Democrats don't get to set the agenda anymore. Those days are over. Your demands are meaningless. Elections have consequences. Remember that one?

Not jumping on the bash Modbert bandwagon, sorry.

But the rest is right on. Which is why I said "if they're serious". They're not, on either side.

So Democrats are now blaming Republicans for something they could have done but didn't? Seems pretty lame to me. The Democrats had a President in the White House and a Super Majority in Congress yet never attempted to cut the Defense Budget. They have no right to demand anything of the Republicans. If cutting the Defense Budget was so important to them, why didn't they do it when they had all the power? Democrats should not be trusted. End of story.

1. did he say he would not cut waste

2. why do you ignore other gop members who have said they would support military budget cuts? you call others hacks for doing this, why are you doing it now?

good point, the dems made the same argument about repubs when they could have done something....

unfortunately, i'm learning its politics as usual and most people's rants depend on who is in office

The Democrats had all the power and failed miserably. Now they have lost some of their power and they still think they get to make demands. Well their demands are Bull Shit. The Republicans will now set the agenda. They don't need the Democrats' approval on anything. Now all of a sudden cutting the Defense Budget is so important to the Democrats? Why didn't they do that in the four years they had absolute power? It's a fair question no?

It's just like when they promised their Hopey Changey was going to get rid of the Patriot Act during the Campaign. They had all the power yet didn't do that either. In fact he not only didn't get rid of the Patriot Act,he actually strengthened it. It's time for the Democrats to just shut up and get the Hell out of the way. The Adults are back in charge. Elections do have consequences.
