PHOENIX — A northern Arizona family that was lost at sea for weeks in an ill-fated attempt to leave the U.S. over what they consider government interference in religion will fly back home Sunday.

Hannah Gastonguay, 26, said Saturday that she and her husband "decided to take a leap of faith and see where God led us" when they took their two small children and her father-in-law and set sail from San Diego for the tiny island nation of Kiribati in May.

But just weeks into their journey, the Gastonguays hit a series of storms that damaged their small boat, leaving them adrift for weeks, unable to make progress. They were eventually picked up by a Venezuelan fishing vessel, transferred to a Japanese cargo ship and taken to Chile where they are resting in a hotel in the port city of San Antonio.

Their flights home were arranged by U.S. Embassy officials, Gastonguay said. The U.S. State Department was not immediately available for comment.

I'm glad the children are safe from the stupid choices of thier parents ..at least for now. This is a good lesson for them. I hope they grow up and tell thier tale so others will learn how dangerous willfully ignorant religious people can be.

Kind of reminds me of the Mormons that showed their patriotism for this country by moving to Mexico and refusing to fight in any American wars.

Then when Mexico got hot..they moved back..and went on Welfare.

Hannah Gastonguay said her family was fed up with government control in the U.S. As Christians they don't believe in "abortion, homosexuality, in the state-controlled church," she said.

U.S. "churches aren't their own," Gastonguay said, suggesting that government regulation interfered with religious independence.

Among other differences, she said they had a problem with being "forced to pay these taxes that pay for abortions we don't agree with."

The Gastonguays weren't members of any church, and Hannah Gastonguay said their faith came from reading the Bible and through prayer.

"The Bible is pretty clear," she said.

If someone doesn’t ‘believe’ in abortion then no one’s forcing anyone to have one, no one’s being ‘forced’ to pay for abortion through his or her taxes, nor is anyone forced to be homosexual. And there are no ‘state controlled’ or ‘government regulated’ churches.

What’s ‘pretty clear’ is the ignorance of many Americans with regard to Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause jurisprudence, and that in a free society there are things fellow Americans might say and do that one disagrees with; it’s a small price to pay to protect individual liberty.

Unless the parents can prove that they are accomplished and knowledgable sailors CPS should yank those kids into a home where thier lives won't be put on the line every time these religious fools get a wild hair.

That's what usually happens when people try to bargain with or tempt God. This family on the other hand has a much clearer message. Their prayers were answered. They prayed for guidance as to where they should go and ended back in the US. That's pretty unmistakable.

try again your still light years away

So you think they should sue?

Well okay..but it might be a little difficult dragging god to court.

Sheesh..doubt anyone knows his/her/it address.

Your not real bright are you?

Your the one with litigation on your mind.

Why don't just say it plan and simple ,you look down on people for their faith, and respect no one that doesn't have your narrow point of view.

Scratch a lib,you find bigots ,racist, and just plan hating ignorance.

It's:

You are not real bright are you?

Or

You're not real bright are you?

When you start insinuating that people are "not real bright"..at least get it right..

OK?

Because you won't look "real bright".
