Keep in mind while watching this clip that a man was on second base when he hit the single and it is the bottom of the 9th and the score is tied. Paul O'nielle thinks that he has to pick the ball up immediately and throw hard to have a chance at throwing him out at the plate in order to save the game. However, the runner held up because he lost track of the ball. Paul did not know this and just assumed the game was over. However, he punted the ball into the infield and saved the game.......until the next inning.
It was during a horrid losing streak by the Reds which accounts for the frustration seen in Paul kicking the ball. Shortly after this, he disappeared for a while.
