Temperatures hovered around 80 degrees, winds calm, as the sun hung high in the sky, jousting away clouds and fending off rain on July 25, 1993. For Mason City residents, this Sunday was one of those days that make winter survivable in Iowa, one when everyone sits on their porches, offering farmer waves to passing neighbors.

For 6-year-old Amber Duncan, what mattered was that it was summer, the official playtime of kids across America.

And that summer she spent as much time as she could with her neighbor Brittney Asbe. Best friends, the girls passed hours together playing Barbies or riding around the block, Amber helming her beloved Big Wheel. On this particular afternoon, the girls beat the heat with their favorite dog day activity: splashing in Asbe’s Slip ‘n’ Slide.

At about 3 p.m., Amber, the Duncan family’s outspoken spitfire, ran home across the alley, excited for the picnic her mom, Lori, planned for that evening.

As Amber hurried away, Brittney waved goodbye, watching her friend, still wet in her favorite swimsuit, disappear amid the yards.

That would be the last time anyone saw Amber.

Today!!! At 3:36 pm.

How didn't anyone at the paper catch that mistake?
No one proofreads anymore?

I've noticed this lately in quite a few articles

Sorry, that irritates me

Good riddance.
